INTRODUCTION

 There are lots of handicaps and elders in the world . Many of them are not able to move as
easily as normal people
 Many rural as well as urban of India have addressed the problem by providing substitutes
for the constructional barriers like building ramps at entrance, lifts etc.
 Wheelchair is a device used by physically challenged people to enhance their personal
mobility.
 Stair climbing wheelchairs currently available for sale in market are costly for the users and
are not easy to afford.
 An semi-automatic Stair climbing wheelchair can be a good solution for the user and can
enhance the mobility to access most of the buildings.
OBJECTIVE

 In this project we propose a design of small area semi-automatic

wheelchair to help Handicaps or eiders be able to move easily in
small area .
 Focused on any place stairs .
 Forming of a wheelchair structured that would carry up to 100kg
 Reduce cost.
 The many places used this wheel chair ex -organization office
hospital in emergency .
 This system is compact and portable (folding).
METHODOLOGY
Component Requirement

The main component used in wheel chair are listed below:-

 Mild Steel Frame
 Geared DC Motor
 Gear Box
 Battery
 Belt
 Wheels
 Chain
 Shaft
 Joystick
FRAME

 A frame is a Structural system that support other components of a

physical construction .
 This frame was fabricated using MS Bar .
Gear Dc Motor

 A gear motor is used as locomotive unit and this motion is

transmitted to the wheels through the shaft.
Specification :

1. Wattage – 250w
2. Voltage - 24v
3. Current - 9.4
4. Speed - 2800 rpm
Gearbox

 Gearbox the gear box is used to maintain speed and increase the
torque transmitted it also reduce the failure of motor during high
shock here we use gearbox of worm gear type having the same
number of teeth at input as well as output shaft.
Battery

 The batteries in which are reversible reaction is responsible for the

generation of electricity.
 Battery type - lead acid battery rechargeable battery
 Voltage -12v
 Current-7.6amp/hour
Belt :

 It is a mechanical system in which the motion /power is transferred

from one shaft to other shaft by flexible element called belt .
Wheel
 The wheels are made up of plastic as shown in below there are
four wheels are used .
 Diameter of front wheel = 125mm.
 Diameter of rear wheel =150mm
 The wheels having good resistance to stable the weight.
Joystick:

 A joysticks switch is a type of electrical switches that are used

manually by moving the switch to one of the trends available
movement.

CONSTRUCTION
1. Body is fixed using welded and bolted joints.
2. Motors and controllers are mounted on the body.
3. Two motors are provided for forward and reverse motion.
4. The motors transmit power through chain drive.
5. A separate motor is provided for rear portion consisting of conveyor belt.
6. Gear box is provided to reduce the speed and multiply the torque.
7. A control box is provided for forward and reverse motion of rear motor.
8. A battery system of 24V is provided as a power supply.
9. Battery used are lead acid storage batteries which can be recharged.
10. When the Joystick is operated motion of the wheel chair is obtained.
11. Bluetooth control system is also provided for operation.
Working
 The wheel chair is powered using a 24V DC power supply system.
 The power is supplied to the motors through a joystick. It provides four degree of
freedom to the chair.
 When the joystick is pressed in the user forward direction motor rotates in the
clockwise direction.
 Similar anticlockwise motion is obtained when the joystick pressed in the reverse
direction.
 For the left and right motion the joystick is pressed in the respective direction .
 The motors rotated opposite in direction which makes to each other.
 This rotates the chain along it’s vertical axis.
 The power is transmitted to the wheel through chain drive.
 For climbing the motor on one staircase, the rear attachment is opened.
This jacks the wheel a little upward and brakes the contact between
ground and wheels.
A separate motor and gear box is provided for climbing mechanism.
Two switches are provided for operation of rear motor.
The switches are provided for operation of rear motor.
The chair is inclined along with the rider with respect to stair case.
A firm contact is obtained between rear belt and stairs.
When the button is pressed belt starts rotating and make one chair to
climb the stairs.
The other button allows to descend the staircase.
PWM WORKING
 A motor speed controller is used to control the rpm of 250W DC
motor.
 It is a connected in parallel along with each of the three motor.
 The Battery supply is given to PWM module.
 When the knob is placed on zero no power is supplied to the motor
irrespective of joystick command.
 When the knob is increment it supplied DC pulses to the motor in
accordance with the position of knob.
 It modulates the Dc pulse to regulate the speed of motor.
 The torque remains constant irrespective of motor speed.
Advantage

The advantages of stairs climbing wheel chair are :

 Easy to control.
 Movement will be smoothing on any matt/surface.
 It works with more efficiency.
 Self-controlled operation of wheelchair without helper.
 It can move in all direction.
 Object can foldable.
 Simple autonomous operation on stairs and steep slopes
possible. Operation as a standard wheel chair to some extent
possible.
Disadvantages

The disadvantages of stairs climbing wheel chair are:

 Need electric power to charge battery.
 It works with limited weight and chair climbs the stair backwards .
Applications
The applications of stairs climbing wheel chair are:
 It is used for physically challenged people.
 It is used travel from one place to another place in structured or
unstructured environments.
 It may be used in hospital for patients .
 It may be used in old age home .

Conclusion

 A number of wheel chair capable of climbing steps are under

current development . This devices represent a variety of
approaches to the tasks of climbing a single step or continuous
stairs. Control system range form relying on no sensor at all for
detecting futures of the environment to closely monitoring the
position of each actuated structure are estimating fetchers of the
environment the majority of identified design are the capable of
climbing of continues stair .
