 English is an international language which is

mostly used in all countries in this world. It is


used in many aspects of life such as
education, technology, science, business and
others. And even in several countries, English
has become their second language. It
indicates that english is very important to
master. In Indonesia , English itself has been
taught from kindergarden level up to the
university level.
 Based on the writers’ experience observation
on teaching training, she found that writing
recount text was a serious problem for the
students. There are some reasons why the
students have problems when they have to
compose the recount text. First, the students
do not know how to compose a story
grammatically. In fact, in writing a text, of
course must be grammatically correct
sentences.
 For example, the students are asked to write
recount text. The teacher will focus on
teaching past tense which is used in recount
text. If the teacher only, reteach how to write
grammatically correct sentences, the studens
will be get difficulties in writing recount, but
also in another types of genre.
 In this research, the researcher observes the
students’ problem in writing recount text at
SMA N 3 pematangsiantar. This school is
one of the state senior high school in
pematangsiantar. There are thirty students
that sit on the tenth grade in a classraoom,
especially in X-3.
 That is why the writer is interested in
choosing this topic because the writer wants
to know the problem of the students in
writing recount text.while making some
group of discussing, the writer will know
deeper the students’ problem in writing
recount text.
 Writing recount text is one of the interesting
ways to train students’ English because they
can write their own experiences which has
been occurred in the past time. So in this
research the writer would like to look for’’
The students’ problem in writing recount text
at SMA Negri 3 Pematangsiantar’’.
 1. What are the students problems in writing
recount text at SMA Negeri 3
Pematangsiantar?
 Based on the problem stated above,the
purpose of this research is “ to find out the
students’ problems in writing recount text at
SMA Negeri 3 pematangsiantar.
◦ She only focuse about writing, paragraph
and students, problem in writing recount
text with the purpose to make the writer
easier in completing or finishing this study
supported by theories from some experts.
 The study is expected to be useful for the
students and for the teacher.For students
trough this research, it is, expected that the
students are more understanding learning
recount text. For the teacher , to know the
students’ problems in learning recount text,
so teacher can teach the recount text easier
and more interesting
 The writer finds the investigation of the
framework for this study by reading some
books:-Bazerman(1979)
◦ -Fraenkel (1965)
◦ - Hundail (1987)
 Nunan (1993),
 J. D Angelo (1989;5)
 Bogden and Biklen (1983)
 Due to the topic ,the writer would like to
define some terms in order to avoid the
ambiquity in meaning, they are:
 1.Research is detailed study of a subject to
discover new facts about it.
 2.Writing is written productive skill
 3. Recount is a type of spoken or written text
that deal with the past experiences
 4.etc.
 The literature riview is a critical look at the
existing research that is significant to the
work that we are carrying out. Obviously at
this point we are not likely to have read
everything related to our research
questions, but we should still be able to
identify the key texts with which we will be
in conversationt as we writer the
dissertation. Literature reviews often include
both the theoretical approaches to our topic
and research (empirical or analitykal) on the
topic.
 According to J. D Angelo (1989;5), writing is a
from of thingking. It means that writing is an
activity to express ideas, issues, evens,
feeling or thingking to the others through
written from. Cohen and Reil in
Kusumaningsih (2001:1) say that writing can
be defined as communication act, a way of
sharing opbservation, though, or ideas with
ourselves and others, it is a tool of
thingking. By writing we can tell about
people, remember the facts and ideas.
 Based on the statement above, it can be
cincluded that writing is expresing ideas,
facts, feeling , experience and thought in
written from. In writing the aspects include
the use of vocabulary struckture of the
sentence composition of the sentence,
spelling and punctuation. These aspects are
important to master in order to be able to
produce goood writing.

 Writing is an aquaired arbitrary system of
visual marks with which people who know the
represented language skill which inform us
the writer’s idea in the written form. It is a
proces of communication,which requires
enterly set of competencies and uses
rethorical convention. Those statements
clearly affirm that writing is not easy because
it is a complex subject and involves
organization, which is truly considered as the
most difficult of the language skills.
Based on the statement above, it can be
cincluded that writing is expresing ideas,

 Writing can often be more conscience, but it
must be fully explicit, whereas spoken
communication can often be sketchy and
leave things to be clarified later in reply to
questions. Writing is sometimes, but not
always, needs to be more formal and more
impersonal. In writing there are ways in which
you can help the address understanding
trough visual layout, trough punctuation.

 According to Nunan (1993), a Genre is a text
type which has :
 a. Communicative purpose : Telling about
something, explain objectively, as the result
of systematical observation or analysis. It can
be general conclusion.
 b. Generic structure (particular stages;
distinctive beginnings, middles and ends)
 c. Linguistic features.
 2.5. Recount
 A Recount is the unfolding of a sequence of
events in the past Recount is a text which
retells events or experiences in the past. Its
purpose is either to inform or to entertain the
audience. Recount is reconstruction of
something happened in the past. Many
experts propose the concept of recount.
 Based on the experts above, it can be
concluded that recount text is a text that is
written to telling an activity or story in the
past.
 This chapter talk about the method and the
procedure to answer the problem
research.Methodology research is the way or
manner how to prepare what we are going to
do in order to get the better research result
or a specific set of procedure of researching.
It explains the design of this study: the
subject, the object, the technique of
collecting data and technique of data
analysis.

 3.1. The Research Design
 A descriptive qualitative design is used in this
study. A qualitative research refers to the
meanings,conceps, defenitions,
characteristics, methapors,symbol and
description of things.(Berg,1989:2) Berg
noted that the word quality refers to the
what, how, when, and where of thing its .

 Bogden and Biklen (1983) formulated the
following characteristics of qualitative
reseach. 1.If has natural setting .2. The
qualitative reseaches tend to analyze the data
inductively and meaning are of essential
concern in qualitative research .
 Futhermore Best (1982:119) defines that
“descriptive research is a research method
that describes and interprets the object
moderately or objectively.
 By the definitions above we can say that
descriptive research is a research method
where the data collected and analyzed that
correlate the situation that is happening and
the researcher reports the objects situation
objectively.

 So ,in this research as a descriptive research,
related to the title that the aims of the
research is find out the students’ problems in
writing recount text in the tenth grade
 3.2. The Subject of Research

 The subject of this study is the students who


study at SMA NEGERI 3 Pematangsiantar and
the English teacher. They are in the tenth
grade exactly in X-3.
 3.3. The Object of the Research

 The object of this research is the


students’writing in the classroom recount
text at SMA NEGERI 3 Pematangsiantar.
 3.4. The Technicque of Collecting Data

 The technicque of collecting data for this


reseach,is done by applying both library and
field research. In collecting the required data,
the writer would apply the library research
that means the writer frequency visits library
consults the adequate volumes of related
references. Then data are analyzed by using
descriptive qualitative approach.
3.5.The technicque of data analysis

The data is divided into two categories . They


are mass data which is taken from the reality
classroom activities, and will be identified in
to primary data which will be used to show if
the process communicative or not by using
parameter of instructional. At last, the writer
willmake a finding about the students’
problems in writing recount text in the tenth
grades.
