Kinetics of Particle: Work

A force F will do work on the particle only

Work of a Force when the particle undergoes a displacement
in the direction of the Force.

Example: F causes the particle tomove along

the path s, from position r to r'

Displacement , dr = r' - r, |dr| = ds

If the angle between tail of dr and F = theta,

then work done in scalar quantity :

can be written as
Interpretation
A. Product of F and component of displacement ds cos ϴ in the direction of the Force

B. product of ds and the component of Force F , Fcos ϴ, in the direction of displacement

0 < ϴ < 90 = Force and displacement will have same sense, so Work is positive

90 < ϴ < 180 = Force and displacement will be opposite sense, so Work is negative

If Force is perpendicular to displacement work is zero.

If Force is applied at a fixed point , in which the displacment is zero so work = ?

Unit = Joule , 1 Joule = 1 N.m or English : Foot pound - ft . lb
