Why cooling? In Power station generator plays a major role in converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. During operation various losses occur in Stator and Rotor resp.. Losses results increase in the form of temperature, this will affect its effiency. So, the temperature rise of generator is controlled by means of cooling. 4/10/2019 IntamThe Future Losses in Generator: Core or Iron loss, Windage loss, Bearing & seal loss.

Methods of cooling: Air - upto 100MW Hydrogen – above 100MW Water + Hydrogen – higher MW(210,500 etc..)

Water + Hydrogen: In higher capacity generators we use water and hydrogen as coolant. Hydrogen for rotor and stator windings. Water for stator core. In recent years power engineers use hydrogen as main coolant, because Its Specific heat, Density, Thermal conductivity.

Why H2? Insulation life increases, so corona is eliminated. Lower temperature rise in generator. Less density.
Drawback: Maintain purity more than 99%, otherwise explosion takes place.
