MEDIA
Media Its technology, symbol systems and processing capabilities
the plural of ‘medium’ is a channel of communication,
that is used to convey information or messages
In Latin media from ‘medius’ that meaning “middle”
Media are means for transmitting or delivering messages
and in teaching-learning perspective delivering content
to the learners, to achieve effective instruction

If it ‘s properly designed, skillfully produced and effectively


used have great influence on teaching-learning because:

 Save time
 Reinforce concepts
 Increase interesting
 Prove a point
 Hold attention
 Aid memory
 Clarify ideas
Type of Instructional Media
One of the oldest and basic forms of communication
• Print Media
Ex : Newspaper, magazines. Journals, etc

• Audio Media Audiotape, audio cassettes, record, radio,

• Photographic Still as pictures, slides, filmstrips, motion images, etc

Visual images or design on some surface. Such as wall,


• Graphic Media canvas, screen, paper, etc. Overhead charts, graph models,
dioramas, maps

• Television/Video Broadcast television, cable television, videotape, atc

Characteristic of Visual and Audio Visual in
Education
• Relevancy
The aid must be relevant to the concept which needs to be developed
that directly related to understanding of the subject matter

• Accuracy
The accuracy of understanding is often considered to be important
rather than the accuracy of specimen

• Interest
Its presence make the learning process very easy and its absence makes
it repulsive.
• Comprehensibility
In selecting and using visual aids we must try to choose things as aids
which relate the new experience with past experience and which are
within the comprehension of the students who are to like it

• Motivation
Audiovisual aids motivate learners as they make the learning process
in classroom interesting, especially in activity oriented subjects for
effective learning
• Realism
A visual aid must process the quality of developing real concepts of
the things. The actual specimen clarify the concept due to realism:

A. Types of Audio-Visual Media
1. Pure Audio-Visual Media
Audio-visual, namely media that can display elements of sound and
moving images, sound elements and elements of image come from one
source
a. Voice Film
A good one can meet the needs of students who are supported by
what is obtained and help the teaching and learning process. The
characteristics are
a) In accordance with the theme of learning
b) Can attract students' interest
c) True and authentic
d) Up-to-date in settings, clothing and the Environment
e) In accordance with the level of maturity of students
b. Video
Video as an audio-visual media that displays motion, is
increasingly popular in our society. The message presented can
be factual and fictional, can provide information, educative and
instructional. Most film assignments can be replaced by videos.
But that does not mean the video will lift the position of the
film. Video media is one type of audio visual media, in addition
to films that are widely developed for learning purposes.

c. Television
In addition to films and videos, television is a media that delivers
audio-visual learning messages with immovable approval
2. Impure Audio-Visual
Impure audio visual is media that does not sound and
the images come from different sources. and often referred
to as audio-visual silence plus sound which is media that
displays sound and still images such as Sound slides
(Sound frame film).

Slide and tape combined learning media can be used


at various locations and for various learning purposes
involving images to support or encourage an emotional
response

1. Visual media that can’t be projected


a. Media is a real thing, the object does not have to be pretend in the
classroom, but students can look directly at the object
b. Model are artificial objects in three-dimensional forms which are
representations or substitute for reality. Graphic media are classified
as usual media that channel messages through visual symbols. The
type of graphic media are
• Picture/photos • Poster
• Illustration • Chart
• Caricature • Graph
2. Visual Media that can be Projected
a. Transparency OHP
A true face-to-face teaching aid, because the
classroom layout remains as usual, teachers can
meet face to face with students

b. Frame/slide film
A transparent film that is generally 35 mm in size
and is given a 2x2 inch frame

c. Frame/slide film
The same as a slide, but it is not cut into pieces but
given in a roll of one roll, then projected with a
projector
Steps to Using Audio Visual Media
and Visual Media
A. Media preparation and learning devices
1) make a plan for implementing learning, 2) learn enough
about the use of media, 3) prepare and regulate the
media equipment to be used

B. Implementation in the learning process


(1) ensure the media is ready to use, (2) explain the
purpose (3) explain the material to students (4) avoid
events that can disrupt students' concentration

C. Follow-up discussions, observations, experiments,


exercises
Advantages Visual Media

1. Repeatable, can be read many times by storing


it or deleting it.
2. Analysis is sharper, can make people really
understand the contents of the news with a
deeper analysis and can make people think
more specifically about the contents of the
writing
3. Can overcome the limitations of experience
possessed by students
4. Visual media allows interaction between
students and the surrounding environment
5. Can instill the correct concept
Disadvantages of visual media

1. Slow and less practical


2. The absence of audio, visual media only in
the form of writing certainly cannot be heard.
So that less detailed material presented
3. Limited visuals, this media can only provide
visuals in the form of images that represent
the contents of the news
4. Production costs are quite expensive
because print media must print and deliver
before it can be enjoyed by the public.
Advantages of Audio Visual Media

1. Learning activities become more


interesting,
2. The results are easier to understand
and understand.
3. Clarify the presentation of the message
so it is not too verbalistic (in the form
of words, mere written or oral)
4. Overcoming the borders of space, time
and sense power.
Disadvantages of Audio Visual
Media

1. Implementation takes a long time

3. The cost is relatively more expensive
4. Audio visual media cannot be used
anywhere and anytime, because audio
visual media tends to stay in place
Conclusion
It is clear that audio visual aids are important tools
for teaching learning process.it helps the teacher to
present the lesson affectively and students learn and
retain the concept better and for longer duration. Use of
audio visual aids improves students’ critical and
analytical thinking. It helps to remove abstract concepts
through visual presentation.
However improper and unplanned use of these
aids can have negative effect on the learning outcomes.
Therefore, teachers should be well trained through in-
service training to maximize the benefit of using these
aids. The curriculum should be designed such that there
are options to activity based learning through audio-
visual aids
