Pre-Reading Activities

– In this activity, students will be assisted to read

books So Tall Within, The Other Side and Moses: When
Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom. Before
they read, the students will create their own KWL chart,
which is broken into three section into three sections on
a sheet of paper such as “know, want to know and
learned” This method will help the students understand
what they are reading while learning about a historical
event. The students will be able to make connections
with how these relate to today and the impact it still has.

Vocabulary Activities
2-3 vocab word examples: Discrimination, Segregation, Racism

– Activity 1:Tag Vocab

– 2. Students will begin class by engaging in a tag activity. Each student will wear a name tag with different words from the vocabulary list on their backs. In groups of four, one member of each
group will wear a tag while others try to define the words they can see on their peer’s chest. The students will be given at least 2 minutes to decide together as a group which answers they want to
go with.

– By relying only on their peers and prior knowledge, this will help the student work on their communication skills and collaboration ideas. Because they will be able to assess and analyze the
different views of their team. By hearing the different terms form their classmates they will each be given the choice of deciding which term they would want to answer.

– Activity 2-Fill in jeopardy

– 7. Activity Overview & Rationale:

– On the smartboard, students will play a game of jeopardy in groups of four. In the game the questions will all be fill in the blank questions, for a certain amount of points such as 100, 200, 300 and
400 points. For example, one for 400 points question would say that “Harriet Tubman was called her people’s Moses but “What was the also a __________ to guide the people to the underground
railroad and to freedom. The group who gets the most points will win a prize that they can take home and share with their parents.

– Activity 3-Vocab Act it out

– 11. Activity Overview & Rationale: Student will be giving a term off the vocab list in which the students will have the act out the term they are describing to their team and to the class. Which
every student gets it right will have a chance to go first after the next round. For example, if the students a student were to portray slavery the student would state “I am forced to serve people I do
not know, and their law restrict me from ever being free again” the students can even use props to express the scene they are trying to get their point across

addition, it will help students to summaries their own knowledge and pose questions. In addition, it also gives
the students time to decompress and not be overwhelmed by assignment. By doing this assignment, students
will be able to take time for writing and get the students to focus their thoughts.

Communication

– Students will focus on the collaboration skills and be able to

communicate with their peers by writing in groups. To will
create their own poems based on the examples that I have show
them. The student will be given long sheet of paper so they can
also name it and narrow down what they wanted the subject to
be. In addition, it is also about learning from each other’s ideas
and debating on what they think is right or wrong about the
topic. It is important to understand the reason why someone
would choose that side compared to your own but also their own
points of views.
