Carbon and its oxides

Lesson 10
Carbon

Oxides
Carbon
monoxide

Physical properties

COLOURLESS NON-POISONOUS IT IS HEAVIER FAIRLY SOLUBLE IN TURNS BLUE UNDER HIGH

AND ODOURLESS BUT ITS THAN AIR. WATER. LITMUS RED. THUS, PRESSURE, IT CAN
GAS. INCREASED SOLUBILITY CARBON DIOXIDE BE LIQUIFIED INTO
CONCENTRATION INCREASES WITH IS ACIDIC IN A LIQUID. THIS
IN THE AIR CAN PRESSURE. NATURE. LIQUID WHEN
CAUSE COOLED CAN BE
SUFFOCATION TURNED TO SOLID
CALLED DRY ICE
Test for Carbon dioxide

Extinguishes the burning splinter

Turns lime water milky.
 Used to make aerated drinks such as soda. How?
 Used to extinguish fire. Why?
 Solid carbon dioxide is a good refrigerant. Why?
 Used to make chemicals such as washing soda and baking soda.
 Makes cakes and breads soft and spongy. How?
 Used to make fertilizers such as urea.
 Used by plants during photosynthesis. Explain its necessity.
Formation of carbon monoxide

 Incomplete combustion of coal

2C + O2  2CO
 When carbon dioxide is passed over
red hot charcoal
CO2 + C  2CO
Physical properties of carbon monoxide

HIGHLY POISONOUS. IF CO IN
COLOURLESS AND THE INHALED AIR INCREASES
ODOURLESS GAS. BY 1% OR MORE, IT CAN
RESULT IN DEATH.

IT IS SPARINGLY SOLUBLE IN
IT IS LIGHTER THAN AIR.
WATER.
Harmful effects of carbon
monoxide poisoning
Symptoms

 Early symptoms- Headaches,

nausea and fatigue.
 Excess of carbon monoxide in
the blood may lead to
suffocation (asphyxia)
followed by brain damages
and eventually causes death
CAUSES

 Sleeping in a closed room with

burning charcoal, coal or coke.
 Starting a car engine in a closed
garage.
 Standing behind a running engine
of a vehicle.
Remedies

 Person suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning

should immediately be brought outdoors.
 Artificial respiration with carbogen should be given
to the person feeling suffocated due to carbon
monoxide poisoning to restore normal breathing.
 A person at a place with a high concentration of
carbon monoxide should wear a gas mask. Such
masks carbon monoxide and oxidise it to carbon
dioxide.
