 YES/NO QUESTION
• Yes/no question form with “to be” by placing the
verb before the subject
Example:
1) The book is green
Is the book green?
2) Huda was writing a letter at 8 o’clock last
night
Was huda writing a letter at 8 o’clock last
night?
• Yes/no question formed with “Auxiliaries” by placing
the Auxiliaries before the subject.
 Example:
1) Roni will visit his parents next week
Will he visit his parents next week?
2) you can spell your name
Can you spell your name?
3) I may borrow your book
May I borrow your book?
4) you must finish your work on time
Must you finish your work on time?
5) Budi and Agus have worked here for five years
Have Budi and Agus worked here for five years?
• Simple present tense and Simple past tense formed by
placing do, does, and did before the subject
Did/Do/Does + Subject + Verb 1

• We use If/Whether
• We must change the tenses

• Example :
Direct question : “Do you want other books?’’ asked eka
Indirect question : Eka asked her friend if she wanted
other books
2. WH- QUESTION
When the direct question begins with a question word (
what, when, why, where, who, and how)
• We should not use an auxiliary do/does/did
• We should change the tenses
• We should put the subject after the question word
• We use the question word as conjuction
• We should not use the verb “said” as reporting verb
(in indirect )

• EXAMPLE:
Direct question : My mother said to me “when did you
leave home?’’
Indirect : my mother asked me when I had left home
