WHAT IS STRESS RIBBON BRIDGE ?
Stress ribbon is a structure similar to a simple suspension bridge. It is a
tension structure. Unlike the simple span, the ribbon is stressed in
compression which adds to the stiffness of the structure.
WHY IT IS USED ?
The main advantage of these structures is their minimal impact on the
environment because they use very little material and they can be erected
with expansion joints
DECK:
Might be pre-fabricated or cast in-situ.
Stressed only by normal forces hence might be reduced by
waffles.
Integrated with end and intermediate supporting construction
so as to work as a composite structures.
LITERATURE REVIEW
J.strasky:-
This paper deals with that the stress ribbon concept borrows the suspension
bridge principle but develops it further by using high strength materials and
modern engineering technology-especially pre-casting and pre-stressing methods.
Aditya V. jog, D.M.Joshi:-
This paper deals with the static behavior of stress ribbon bridges. The
structural governing equations are studied and presented. The equations are then
integrated for a particular case of a single span bridge, accounting for various
loading conditions and pre-stressing forces.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
The construction of the bridge is relatively straight forward.
The abutments and piers are built first. Next the bearing cables were stretched from abutment to abutment
and draped over steel saddles that rested at top the piers.
The bearing tendons generally support the structure during construction, and thus an additional false work
is used rarely.
precast panels were suspended via support rods located at the four corners of each panel.
The next step was to place post tensioning ducts in the bridge. The ducts were placed directly above the
bearing cables and support rods, which were all located in two longitudinal troughs that run along the
length of the bridge.
STRESS RIBBON BRIDGES SUPPORTED OR SUSPENDED ON
ARCHES
This structure forms a self-anchoring system where the horizontal force from
the stress ribbon is transferred by inclined concrete struts to the foundation,
where it is balanced against the horizontal component of the arch.
Structural system
Advantages:-
Stress ribbon pedestrian bridges are very economical, aesthetical and almost
maintenance free structures.
They require minimal quantity of materials.
They are erected independently from existing terrain and therefore they have a
minimum impact upon the environment during construction.
They are quick and convenient to construct if given appropriate conditions, without
false work.
A stress ribbon bridge allows for long spans with a minimum number of piers and the
piers can be shorter than those required for cable stayed or suspension bridges.
Disadvantages:-
Large horizontal forces at the end and intermediate which determines
economy of bridge.
Remedy:-
Construction of flexible member close to supports
Widening of deck at the ends
Having an arch shaped intermediate support
Danger of overtaking and oscillations due to high span to width ratio
Remedy:-
Increasing sag
Proper dynamic analysis
