What is a composite?
 A composite material is a material made from two or
more constituents materials with significantly
different physical or chemical properties that when
combined ,produce a material with characteristics
different from the individual component.

 Basically they are called Matrix and Reinforcement.

Applications of composite material
 Aircraft industry
 Structural application ( tank ,bridge structures
etc)
 Pressure vessels
 Transportation / Automobile Sector
 Bio medical industry ( Pharmaceutical Industry)
 Sports equipments.
Pharmaceutical industry
 The pharmaceutical industry discovers, develops,
produces, and markets drugs or products for use as
medications /aid to be administered for the patients to
get rid of their disease or inabilities (physical).

It includes-
1. Prosthetics and Orthotists
2. Dental implants.
3. Surgical implants
prosthetics
 Prothetists and Orthotists help people who acquire
disability or were born with physical defects, by fitting
them with artificial supports.
 Prosthesis is an artificial substitute for a missing part
of the body.
 The parts include arms and legs, bone, artery, heart
valve replacements, and teeth.
Characteristics of a prosthetic composite
 Weightless and ideal weight distribution.
 Easily affordable
 Corrosion resistant
 Non-toxic,
 Biologically and chemically stable,
 And have sufficient mechanical integrity and strength
to withstand physiological loads.
 Fatigue resistance and stiffness properties.
Materials used
Conventional –
316L stainless steel, Co alloys, Ti alloys,
ceramics.
Composites used.
Carbon and epoxy based composite
High density poly ethylene (HDPE)
Polyurethane polypropylene

Manufacture – Injection Moulding.

Indian scenario
Jaipur foot – birth place of prosthetics in india.

ALMCO – Artificial limbs manufacturing corporations

ACM advanced composite mission , DST, Govt of India.

Dental restorative applications.
 A dental restoration or dental filling is a treatment to
restore the function, integrity, and morphology of
missing tooth structure resulting from caries or
external trauma as well as to the replacement of such
structure supported by dental implants
Characteristics of a dental
composite
 Corrosion resistance
 Chemical resistance
 Fracture toughness, compressive strength, load
bearing capacity ,flexural strength ,fatigue resistance ,
fracture strength
 bacterial adhesion as well as resistance
 adhesion capability
 Ability to made into desired shapes.
Materials used
 Matrix – bisphenol –A-glycidyldimethacrylate (Bis
GMA) , triethylene glycoldimetacrylate (TEGDMA)

 FRCs based on carbon, polyaramid, polyethylene, and

glass have been largely studied and among all, glass
fibers of various compositions are more commonly
applied as restorative and prosthetic materials
ORTHOPEDIC APPLICATIONS
Composite materials can reproduce both the macroscopic and microscopic
Structure and the most important mechanical properties of the natural tissues.
Composites materials are studied and tested to improve
the performance and the long-term stability of femoral stems and bone
cement, to replace cartilage, to reconstruct tendons and ligaments and as
bone grafts.

By Resin Transfer Moulding
Something interesting
 Human hair can be used as a reinforcement in composite.

 Our skin and bone are the best example of composite.

 World largest used raw material is a composite (cement)

 3d printing will become more useful in creating composite
materials in the future. They can be used to print layers of
different materials making new types of composites

 The earliest man-made composite material were bricks made of

straw and mud. The ancient Egyptians recorded these being
made in tomb painting.
CONCLUSION
 There is a wide scope for composite materials as it
manifests the need of the hour and prove to be a
effective and strong competitor of conventional
materials.
