SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS


STRAND DISCRIMINATION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Strand discrimination is the unjust treatment of students


because of their strand. but in reality, there is neither seperior strand,
nor an inferior strand. All strands are special, in one way or another.
Discrimination is common in all society. Weather it is intentional or
not, people discriminates against each other. it is just a natural thing
that humans do because that is the way human are discrimination
begins in the mind and it is only when humans intentionally base
their own decisions on these prejudices that are wrong. This study is
to be conducted for the researches to know the views and opinions of
the senior high school students towards strand discrimination in
Tolosa National High School.
The study will be held at Tolosa National High School, Malbog,
Tolosa Leyte. Wherein Humanities and social sciences (HUMSS),
Industrial Arts (IA) and Home Economics (HE) strand is being
offered to senior high school (SHS) students. As senior high school
students in Tolosa National High School, they are the students who
have choosen this strands whom, they will be the respondents in
the study. The research will be conducted at Senior High School
Building from November to December 2019.
In this study, the researches ought to describe specific terms
such as strand, discrimination, views and opinions. Strand is a
consistent thread running through a course offer irrespective of its
subject content. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment
of different categories of people or things, especially on the
grounds of race,age or sex.
According to Omarali (2017), just over three years ago, the
Philippines implemented their new K to 12 program, which is
basically the same program that all countries follow except for the
Angola and Djibouti. With this new program, students are given a
choice to choose from the academic, Sports, Arts and Technical-
Vocational-Livelihood tracks. However, some school in the
Philippines only offer three strands underneath it; Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS); Home Economics (HE) and Industrial
Art (IA).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand


the perceptions of the Senior High School students towards strand
discrimination in Tolosa National High School.
Specifically, the study seeks to shed light on the following
questions:
1. What are the perception towards strand discrimination of the
Senior High School students at Tolosa National High School?
1.1. How would the Senior High School students avoid strand
discrimination?
1.2. What are the understanding of strand discrimination
towards the Senior High School at Tolosa National High
School?

The model of the study is shown in Figure 1. The schematic


diagram focuses on the perception of the Senior High School
students and the perception of the Senior High School students
focuses on the ways to avoid strand discrimination and the
understandings of the Senior High School students towards strand
discrimination.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
Phenomenological study will be used by the
researches in the study. It is to understand about the
perception of Senior High School students towards strands
discrimination in Tolosa National High School.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The selected Senior High School students will be the
participants of this study. The selected Senior High School are
expected to answer all the question that the researchers will
ask about this study.
SAMPLING PROCEDURE
Volunteer sampling is used in this study it is a sampling technique where
participants self-select to become part of a study because
they volunteer when asked, or respond to an advert.
RESEARCH LOCALE
The study will be conducted in Tolosa National High School of
Barangay Malbog Tolosa, Leyte. The school implemented Senior High
School and offered different strand such as, TVL- HE, EIM, HUMSS.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
Open-Ended survey questionnaire will be used as an
instrument in conducting this study. The researchers will fully gather
information on what would be the perception of the selected Senior
High School students towards strand discrimination.
ANALYSIS OF DATA
The gathered data will be analyzed through looking at
the patterns and interpreting the theme found in the responses of
the participants. The validity and reliability of the study will be
measured as data that will be presented through coding ,
categorizing and coming up with a theme that is to be described
and explained by the sufficient and accurate data base on the
perception of the selected Senior High School in Tolosa National
High School.
CONCLUSION

Out of 19 selected Senior High School students all of them gave


a negative perception and ways to avoid strand discrimination
towards the study entitled Strand Discrimination: Perceptions of the
Senior High School students at Tolosa National High School.
Therefore, there is no discrimination in a place with equal treatment,
so in order to have a strand discrimination free place students should
be open minded and should respect each other for everybody is
facing difficulties in their chosen track and everybody should
remember that each strand has something special, each strand is
important. The students must always keep in their minds that they
can choose the strand they want,they can choose the strand that is
suited to their skills and abilities.
RECOMMENDATION

Upon the conduct of the research, the following recommendations


were made:
• The students must have fair treatment in every strand
• The students must have a knowledge on every strand to avoid
discriminating
• The students must be open minded
• The students must know to respect
• The teachers should remind or give advice to the students to
avoid this stigma
