METHODS
Where:
θ is the co-latitude (latitude = 90o - θ),
ϕ is longitude,
r is the radial distance from the centre of the sphere,
a is the radius of the sphere,
Pnm(θ) is Legendre polynomial of degree n and order m
normalized according to the convention of Schmidt
The Earth's Magnetic Field
The magnitude of the normalized Schmidt surface harmonics
when squared and averaged over the sphere can be
expressed as:
If sources exist both inside and outside the sphere, then the
potential, V in source-free regions near the surface of the sphere is
given by the sum:
Temporal Variations of the Earth's
Magnetic Field - Overview
Secular Variations - These are long-term (changes in the
field that occur over years) variations in the main magnetic
field that are presumably caused by fluid motion in the
Earth's Outer Core. Because these variations occur slowly
with respect to the time of completion of a typical
exploration magnetic survey, these variations will not
complicate data reduction efforts.
