ANKLE-BRACHIAL INDEX

INTRODUCTION

ABI Sensitive &

spesific metric of
PAD (Peripheral
Arterial Disease) Predicting mortality
& adverse CV events
(esp. in every smoker
> 50 y.o diabetic
patients > 50, all
The systolic at patients > 70 y.o)
ankle is divided by
the systolic
pressure at the
arm

Measuring and Understanding the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), Standford Medicine, 2017
Indication
• In the primary care setting, an ABI is useful in the following 2 settings:
• In a symptomatic patient, to diagnose PAD
• In an asymptomatic patient, to assess the vascular risk for PAD

Ankle-Brachial Index Measurement, Medscape Journal 2017

Equipment
• An appropriately sized blood pressure cuff for the upper and lower
extremities with a working sphygmomanometer
• A Doppler device for detecting flow
• Ultrasound transmission gel
• An examination table

Patient Preparation
• The patient should lie on an examination table in a supine position.

Technique of ABI
• Measuring the brachial pressure
• Measuring the ankle pressure
• Calculating the ABI
• Interpreting the ABI
