Pavlov's dog experiment (Early Big Question)
• Dog + Food + Bell= Pavlov's experiment

• Ring a bell
• Dog ran curiously to noise
• Get fed
• After a while-Dogs understand Bell=food
• Dogs start to salivate-when hearing the bell
• After a while they don't get fed when they hear bell
• Still salivate
HOW DOES OUR BRAIN
WORK EXACTLY?
By: Mario Hernandez
Made up of 3 parts

• Forebrain- Cerebrum, Thalamus, and

Hypothalamus

• Midbrain- Tectum, Cerebral aqueduct,

Tegmentum, and Cerebral Cortex

• Hindbrain-Medulla, the Pons and

Cerebellum
Forebrain
• Consists of 3 parts
- Cerebrum
-Thalamus
-Hypothalamus

Front of the brain (who would have thought)

Cerebrum
• Divided into 4 lobes
-occipital, temporal, frontal, and parietal lobes

• Controls senses, thoughts, and movements

Thalamus
• Receives sensations
-Touch
-Pain
-Temperature

• Passes to Cerebral Cortex for interpretation

Hypothalamus
• Controls many things such as
-Body Temperature
-Hunger
-Important aspects of parenting and attachment behaviors
-Thirst
-Fatigue
-Fatigue
-Circadian rhythm-Like a clock for your body
BREAK CHECK
Midbrain
• Consists of 4 parts
-Tectum
-Cerebral aqueduct
-Tegmentum
-Cerebral

Middle of brain (Right?)

Tectum
• Responsible for
-Auditory (hearing)
-Visual Reflexes
Cerebral aqueduct
• Connects 3rd and 4th ventricles to ensure flow of cerebrospinal fluid

• 3rd and 4th ventricles- Passage ways for CSF

• CSF-Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

-Characterized by
1. Fatigue
2. Cognitive impairment
3. Chronic wide spread pain
Tegmentum
• 3 regions
-Red nucleus- Involved with coordination of sensorimotor information
-Periaqueductal Gray- Primary function is pain suppression
-Substantia Nigra- 2 parts- Pars Reticulata and Pars Compacta
Pars Compacta Pars Reticulata
-Synthesize dopamine -Output system of corpus
-Projects to Caudate Nucleus straitum
And Putamen-Mediate movement
and motor coordination
-Influences neurotransmitter-goes to P.R
Cerebral Cortex
• Tightly packed neurons
• Responsible for
-Higher thought processes
-Speech
-Decision making
BREAK CHECK
Hindbrain
• Medulla
• The Pons
• Cerebellum

Back of the brain (Wow wonder how they came up with this name)
Medulla
• Helps regulate
-Breathing
-Heart and blood vessel function
-Digestion
-Sneezing
-Swallowing

• Center for respiration and circulation

The Pons
• Controls
-Breathing
-Communication between different parts of the brain
-Sensations (Hearing, taste, balance, etc.)
Cerebellum
• Receives information from sensory system, spinal cord, etc.
• Regulates motor movements

• Coordinates voluntary movements (Posture, balance, coordination,

etc.)
• Results= Normal muscular activity
