Questions and answer on ID fans

Question and answers on ID Fan

Which are the Air Handling Fans in a Power Plant?

PA Fan, FD Fan & ID Fans are the main air

handling fans in a Power Plant.

What is the role of ID Fan in a Balanced Draft Furnace?

ID Fan maintains a Balanced Draft in furnace by controlling

the furnace pressure at a set point of -0.5 inches of water
column relative to the atmosphere.
Purpose and Function of ID Fan

Purpose and Function of ID Fan

Before getting into the details of ID Fan lets first understand

the Purpose & Function of an ID Fan.
Purpose and Function of ID Fan

Purpose & Function of an ID Fan

To achieve complete combustion of coal in furnace:

Hot Primary air is used to dry, grind, classify and take pulverised coal
to burners.
Secondary Air, supplied by Forced Draft Fan is used for complete
combustion and to control Nox and CO formation, is supplied by FD fans
This combustion results in hot flue gases which transfers its heat
energy to the heating elements, located inside the boiler.
Induced Draft Fan exhausts the combustion products from the boiler,
thru the stack into the atmosphere.

Permissives

Permissives
 Before starting any auxiliary equipment in a power plant, a set of
conditions should be met by the auxiliary & its associated
systems. These conditions are safeguards for the auxiliary
 In power plant terminology, these conditions are called
“Interlocks” or “Permissives”. If permissives are ignored, the
auxiliary will be damaged

14
Permissives

Start Permissives for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

1. One of Lube Oil Pump running & oil pressure not low (0.2 to 0.4 mPa)

2. Inlet Guide Vanes Minimum

Logic:
Lube oil pump running is a must for supply of proper
lubricating oil to ID fan and motor bearings. The fan should
start at no load condition, therefore, inlet guide vanes should
be in minimum position.
Permissives

Start Permissives for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

3. Inlet gas Damper Closed

4. One APH running

Logic:
The fan should start at no load condition, therefore, gas
dampers should be in closed position.

If the corresponding air pre heater is not running, air path

resistance will be too high for ID Fan to start smoothly.
Permissives

Start Permissives for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

5. ID Fan Motor Cooling Fan 1 Running

6. ID Fan Motor Cooling Fan 2 Running

Logic:
Motor cooling fan should be running to cool down the fan
motor temperature to a permissible limit.
Permissives

Start Permissives for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

7. ID Fan motor DE bearing temperature T1<75°

8. ID Fan motor NDE bearing temperature T2<75°

Logic:
When the fan runs on load motor bearings tend to heat up
due to continuous running of motor shaft. Therefore, when the
motor is started its bearing temperature should be normal.

Permissives

10. ID Fan bearing temperature NDE side T2<85°

Tripping Points

Tripping Points

 A range of parameters, called tripping points are defined for

equipment in a power plant
 To ensure safe operation, equipment must not run beyond the range
defined by the tripping points
 When tripping points are exceeded, the equipment is forcibly shut
down (in other words, the equipment “trips”)

22
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Fan Run 60s I/L Damper closed

Rationale:
Fan will run on no load. Will result in churning of air in
downstream of Inlet Damper. Resulting torsion will damage
the fan.

23
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• No Oil pump running or oil pressure low for 5s

Rationale:
No Oil supply to the bearings of Fan & Motor will damage the
bearings.

24
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Both APH stopped For 60s

Rationale:
If both APHs stop, Flue Gas will pass on without imparting
Heat to Primary & Secondary Air. Excessive hot Flue gas may
damage ID Fan elements.

25
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Motor bearing DE side vibration > 7.1 mm/s

Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing.

26
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Motor bearing DE side vibration > 7.1 mm/s

Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Non Driving End will
severely damage the bearing.

27
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Motor bearing DE side vibration > 7.1 mm/s

Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing which might result in damaging
the fan shaft.

28
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• Motor bearing NDE side vibration > 7.1 mm/s

Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing which might result in damaging
the fan shaft.

29
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• FSSS stop ID Fan command: Instantaneous

Rationale:
Command initiated by FSSS indicates boiler Emergencies. In
case one FD fan trips the corresponding ID Fan should trip to
avoid hi negative pressure in furnace.

30
Tripping Points

Tripping Points for ID Fans at Jharsuguda:

ID Fan will get tripped:

• ID Fan bearing NDE side temperature T1>95°
• ID Fan bearing NDE side temperature T2>95°
• ID Fan bearing DE side temperature T1>95°
• ID Fan bearing DE side temperature T2>95°
• ID Fan middle bearing temperature T1>95°
• ID Fan middle bearing temperature T2>95°
• ID Fan motor DE bearing temperature T1>80°
• ID Fan motor NDE bearing temperature T2>80°

Rationale:
If the bearing temperature crosses this value, the babbit of
bearing will melt resulting in bearing damage.

pressure at a set point of -0.5 inches of water column relative to the
atmosphere.
 A typical ID Fan is an Axial Flow Fan with:
 Inlet Dampers
 Discharge or Outlet Dampers
 Inlet Guide Vanes

 In power plant applications, Vane axial fans are used

 Inlet Guide Vane axial fans are the most energy-efficient fans available
and should be used whenever possible.
Wrap Up

We now know that:

 In Jharsuguda power plant, two Vane axial type Induced Draft Fans are
employed in each unit.
 Amongst the various start permissives, the most important ones are as
follows:
 Lube oil pump should be running, Inlet gas Damper should be
closed, Motor cooling fan should be running, and Fan's bearing
temperature should be normal.
 The Fan will trip if the Fan Run 60s I/L Damper is closed, oil pressure is
low for 5s, FSSS stop ID Fan command
is set to Instantaneous, or
the bearing temperatures is not normal.
 The System Line-up & starting activities should be
performed in the prescribed sequence.
