Permissives
Before starting any auxiliary equipment in a power plant, a set of
conditions should be met by the auxiliary & its associated
systems. These conditions are safeguards for the auxiliary
In power plant terminology, these conditions are called
“Interlocks” or “Permissives”. If permissives are ignored, the
auxiliary will be damaged

Permissives
1. One of Lube Oil Pump running & oil pressure not low (0.2 to 0.4 mPa)
Logic:
Lube oil pump running is a must for supply of proper
lubricating oil to ID fan and motor bearings. The fan should
start at no load condition, therefore, inlet guide vanes should
be in minimum position.
Permissives
Logic:
The fan should start at no load condition, therefore, gas
dampers should be in closed position.
Logic:
Motor cooling fan should be running to cool down the fan
motor temperature to a permissible limit.
Permissives
Logic:
When the fan runs on load motor bearings tend to heat up
due to continuous running of motor shaft. Therefore, when the
motor is started its bearing temperature should be normal.

22
Tripping Points
Rationale:
Fan will run on no load. Will result in churning of air in
downstream of Inlet Damper. Resulting torsion will damage
the fan.
23
Tripping Points
Rationale:
No Oil supply to the bearings of Fan & Motor will damage the
bearings.
24
Tripping Points
Rationale:
If both APHs stop, Flue Gas will pass on without imparting
Heat to Primary & Secondary Air. Excessive hot Flue gas may
damage ID Fan elements.
25
Tripping Points
Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing.
26
Tripping Points
Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Non Driving End will
severely damage the bearing.
27
Tripping Points
Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing which might result in damaging
the fan shaft.
28
Tripping Points
Rationale:
High velocity vibrations in fan motor’s Driving End bearing will
severely damage the bearing which might result in damaging
the fan shaft.
29
Tripping Points
Rationale:
Command initiated by FSSS indicates boiler Emergencies. In
case one FD fan trips the corresponding ID Fan should trip to
avoid hi negative pressure in furnace.
30
Tripping Points
Rationale:
If the bearing temperature crosses this value, the babbit of
bearing will melt resulting in bearing damage.

34
Line up and Start up Activities
Ensure the flue gas path is lined up & both APH are
running.

Line up and Start up Activities
4. Check boiler slag path, seal through, and boiler man holes and peep holes.
Ensure that boiler slag bath & seal trough should be filled
with water.
36
Line up and Start up Activities
5. Check ID Fan lube oil tank and charge lube oil cooler.
37
Line up and Start up Activities
6. Check discharge valves for the lube oil pumps and lube oil line.
Ensure that the discharge valves for the lube oil pumps are
open.
Ensure the lube oil line from pump through filter and cooler
up to the motor bearing is not open anywhere.
38
Line up and Start up Activities
7. Check inlet gas damper to ID Fan and ID Fan Inlet Guide Vane.
39
Line up and Start up Activities
Start any one lube oil pump, put the other pump in
interlock position (auto standby mode).

ID Fan Start Screen
All the Permissives & Tripping conditions are visible in the ID Fan Start
screen.
When all the Permissive are available, the buttons related to each of the
Permissives turn green.
When all the Permissives are green & Tripping condition buttons are red,
START button is Pressed & the ID Fan Start sequence, as already
explained, begins.
Let’s look at the Digital Control System (DCS) template of ID Fan Start
