GERUND is a
verbal that uses
the present
participle of a
verb (the ing
form) but acts as
a noun.

functions of Gerund in
a sentence?
That’s a nice question.
Even though gerund is
a noun, Gerund can
act as a subject,
subjective
complement, direct
object, object of the
preposition and
appositives.

Acting is fun.
(Gerund as
the subject of
a sentence)
I love acting.
(A gerund as the
direct object of the
verb love)
I got this bruise
from fencing. (gerund
as the object of a
preposition)
The best form of
exercise, walking, is
also the least
expensive. (Walking is the
gerund in this sentence and
acts as an appositive
explaining the best form of
exercise.)
My favorite hobby is gardening. (Gerund as Subjective
Complement. “My favorite hobby” is the
subject, and gardening is its
complement.)
