Use of concrete
Concrete is the most widely used man-made material
Use of concrete
Large volume of concrete used in construction industry.
Use of High strength concrete is getting popular
Sri Lanka also use high strength concrete in many projects now
Introduction
Due to use of high strength concrete in large volumes,
temperature rise is an important parameter.
Effect on temperature rise:
◦ Early thermal cracking
◦ Induce tensile stains in the concrete
◦ Reduction of water tightness
◦ Reduction of durability
◦ Reduction of strength
Introduction
Temperature Rise in Concrete
◦ During curing of concrete, heat is generated by the chemical reactions
between cementations materials and water
◦ Typical Limit Range from 70°C to 80°C
◦ Its hard to predict a universal model for temperature rise
◦ Development of customised local model
Introduction
Numerical Models to Predict the Temperature
◦ Finite Element Methods
◦ Finite Difference Methods
Heat evaluation is an input parameter to Numerical Model
◦ Analytical Method
◦ Experimental Method
Temperature prediction in fresh concrete is a great interest area for
designers and contractors
Research Significance
 Temperature prediction methods still been developing.
 Construction methods, form types, cement chemistry, cement
fineness, supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) and chemical
admixtures.
 So these temperature prediction methods may need to be adopted
to local condition.
Objectives
Formulation of FE model
Validation of FE model with experimental data.
Experiments on industry used concrete mixtures to develop
adiabatic curves
Composition of Set of guideline to control temperature in typical
structures
Literature Survey
Under Literature Survey following sections will study further,
◦ Adiabatic temperature measurement
◦ Semi adiabatic temperature measurement
◦ Semi adiabatic test and heat loss compensation
◦ Selection of samples/mix designs
◦ MIDAS model development and validation process
Measuring temperature rise in concrete
Adiabatic test
• A computer-controlled environmental chamber
• Controlling the air temperature inside the chamber within
±0.2 °C of the preset value
• Concrete specimen cubical with dimension of 0.25 m
Measuring temperature rise in concrete
Semi adiabatic test

• Semi-adiabatic devices are widely used as a

substitute for the adiabatic test to predict adiabatic
temperature rise.
• Due to heat loss the measured temperature rise is
lower than
• So heat loss compensation must be done to get
accurate results
Development of temperature rise-time
