FOREWORD

This Strategic Intervention Material is designed to intensify, reinforce, and broaden

the skills of the students especially in English grammar. It is made in such a way that the

students will not only find English easy to understand but also fun to study with. The more

they will engage in the activities, the more they will learn and enjoy. The knowledge that

they will gain from this material will make them realize the importance of understanding and

practicing correct English Grammar.

English Grammar skills are useful in every aspect of life from education to

leadership, and social life to employment opportunities. Proper grammar is also essential

for understanding English as a second language as well as for learning a new language,

since all languages follow grammatical patterns. This puts the next generation at an

immediate disadvantage if learning incorrectly. (Daily Grammar)

The SIM is organized with discussions on the different sentence structures and

types. This will guide the students as they do the activities. The tasks were arranged from

easy to more challenging ones. Students were provided with key answers at the end of

this material for them to check their works.

It is hoped that the SIM will satisfactorily increase the knowledge of the students

especially in the use of English as a second language.

Guide
Hello Learner!
Do you want to develop your writing skill? Then
you should recognize the printed text in order to
understand how important sentences are. We use
sentences to understand or communicate with each
other.

Stories are made of sentences. Paragraphs are

composed of sentences to develop your love of
reading. In developing your love of reading, you have
to start identifying the different kinds of sentences and
to construct your own. Do you like it?

So let us get started!

Let us review!

A sentence is a group of words that expresses

complete thought. It has a subject and a predicate. It
starts with a capital letter and ends with a period.

A sentence is a unit containing complete

utterances. A sentence may be simple, compound ,
complex or compound-complex.

Here are your tasks:

1) Identify the main or principal clauses in each sentence structure.

2 ) Recognize the subordinate clauses in each sentence structure

3 ) Identify the kinds of sentences according to structure and according to form

4 ) Construct different kinds of sentences according to structure and form

Are you now ready to learn how and why sentences are important?
Let’s make it easy and fun!

1
Guide
In past lesson, you have learned that a sentence is a unit
containing complete utterances. It may be simple, compound, complex or
compound-complex.

Take note that a dependent clause can only

express a complete thought if you connect it to
an independent clause.

Activity 1
Are you familiar with me?
What structure am I?

have connected the dependent and independent clauses to form a
complex sentence. Now, you have to recognize whether the
following statements/ utterances are simple, compound, complex or
compound-complex.

Instructions: Study the sentences given below. Identify what kind

of sentences are they: (simple, compound, complex,
compound-complex).

Copy the statements below and write it on the grid

provided according to its kind.

1. The driver slowed down the car.

Simple Recall

Kinds of Sentences According to Form

There are four general kinds of sentences

according to form:

1. The declarative sentence - states a fact. A

period ends a declarative sentence.

Example: The students marched in the parade.

2. The interrogative sentence asks a question.

A question mark ends an interrogative
sentence.

Example: Did the students march in the parade?

3. The imperative sentence – expresses a

command. A period ends an imperative
sentence.

Example: Students, march in the parade.

4. The exclamatory sentence expresses strong

feeling. An exclamation point ends an
exclamatory sentence.

Example: How the students marched in the

parade?

6
Guide
More Information
The interrogative sentence follows a definite
pattern:
1. Statements with is, are, was, were may be
changed into questions by exchanging the
position of the subject and the predicate.
S V
Examples: a. Mario is a student.
V S
b. Is Mario a student?

2. Statements indicating present time and using

verbs other than is , was, are and were are
changed into questions by placing does
(singular0 or do (plural) as the first word to signal
the questions.
(Note: In this S V
form the Examples: a. Myrna works hard.
s – form of the V S
verb is b. D oes Myrna work hard?
assumed by
does.) 3. Statements indicating past time
are changed into questions by
placing did at the beginning to signal
the question.
S V
Example: Ely went home.
V S
Did Ely go home?
4. Statements with verb phrases ( verbs of more than
one word ) are changed into questions by placing the
subject after the helping verb.
S V
Examples: a. The students will come soon.
V S
Will the students come soon?
S V
Examples; The students had done well?
V S
Had the students done well?

5. In the imperative, the subject is always understood as the personal

pronoun you . A statement may be changed into an imperative sentence
by omitting the subject.

Example:
Statement : You keep quiet!
Imperative: Keep quiet!
The negative form of the imperative sentence is formed by
placing do not before the verb.
Example:
Please go away.
Please do not go away.

7
Activity 3
Your previous knowledge on the kinds of
sentences you’ve learned will help you in
enhancing your skills in writing sentences to
form paragraphs.

Keep Learning!

Let’s think and write!

B. Let’s have another try! Let’s start building!

Do this : Using the type of sentence indicated in each number, write

a questions or expression to which the given phrase or clause will
be the answer. The first one is done for you.

To construct a compound sentence, use coordinating

conjunctions like and, but or , etc. In compound sentences
the subject or the auxiliary verb or both may be omitted to
avoid wordiness:

Examples:
We are sitting and (We are) listening to the teacher.

We should all come tomorrow and ( We should) bring

our books.

B. Fix and Mix:

Try this again:

Complete the sentences with main/ principal or subordinate clauses.

1. Now as you live out your elementary years

_________________________________________________.

2. After going to school, ___________________________.

3. School is a place _______________________________.

4. Werlito smiled at me _________________________________________________.
