LIFTING ACCIDENTS

 Accidents with cranes and lifting appliances


are caused by the abuse, misuse or neglect
of the equipment, by those who operate
them and by supervisors and others
responsible for the operations

 It is people who cause accidents not the


plant
UNSAFE WORKING &
ACCIDENTS
• RESULT FROM:
• A lack of training or knowledge of the
equipment.
• Poor maintenance of the equipment
• The misuse of plant and equipment
• Too much hurry to get the job done
SAFE SYSTEM OF WORK

 A safe system of work must be laid down


and effectively communicated to all those
involved in the lifting operation

 This must include:


• Thorough planning of the operation, along
with the selection, provision and use of
suitable cranes and equipment.
• The maintenance, testing and examination
of all equipment.
• Supervision by trained and competent
personnel, with all necessary authority to
progress or stop a job as necessary.
• The provision of all test certificates and
other documentation relevant to the
equipment being used.
• The prevention of unauthorised use or
movement of equipment.
• The safety of all persons, both those
involved with the lift as well as those not
involved with the lift.

• THE SUPERVISOR IN
CHARGE OF THE OPERATION
MUST CONDUCT A S.T.A.R.T
BRIEFING PRIOR TO
COMMENCEMENT OF THE
JOB
RIGGING & RIGGING
EQUIPMENT

• No crane or other lifting appliance must be


erected unless under the supervision of a
competent person nominated by
Management. De-rigging will also only be
carried out under the supervision of a
competent person.
LIFTING OPERATIONS

• The competent appointed person must:

• Assess the proposed lift to provide for


planning, selection of equipment,
instruction and supervision to enable the
work to be carried out safely
• Ensure that all tests, inspections,
examinations and maintenance have been
carried out, and that there is a procedure for
reporting defects and taking whatever
corrective actions is necessary.
• Must have the authority to carry out there
duties and to stop operations if they think
there is danger
• Drivers/operators of cranes and those
involved with rigging must be adequately
trained and experienced.
SAFE WORKING LOAD
• All cranes and rigging equipment must be
clearly marked with their maximum safe
working load (SWL)
