SOCIOLOGY is taken from the Latin word…
“Socius”
Meaning
“Companion or Associate”
And the Greek word “LOGOS”
“Study”
WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?
Therefore, the term Sociology
basically means..

The study of social beings

Sociology is the science of society


and the social interactions taking
place within it.

human society.
OTHER MEANING
• It is a part of social sciences. The study of sociology
aims at analyzing the patterns of human behavior,
deriving their causes and speculating the future of
the behavioral patterns in society.
• It intends to understand the ways in which different
elements of society influence each other, how a
society is formed, how it functions, and how is
evolves.

1. CONSERVATION, DEVELOPMENT, AND
IMPROVEMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES.
 Human resources are the people themselves.
Human resources can be conserved, developed,
and improved through proper family planning
methods, general health and physical conditions,
values, professional education, and vocational and
technical training. Man-power development is a
non-formal education system for the out-of-
school learners.
2. CONSERVATION, DEVELOPMENT, AND
UTILIZATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
 Among the natural resources are
forest and forest products, mines of
all kinds, agricultural lands, marine
resources, sea and land fisheries,
plants, animals, and fowls.
3. PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND
CONSUMPTION OF ECONOMIC GOODS.
 Increased population demands greater
and improved economic goods. Modern
science and technology, equitable distribution
of the fruits of production especially capital
and labor and wise consumption of
consumer goods lead to increased
production.
4. LAND, WATER, AND AIR TRANSPORTATION
AND COMMUNICATION
 Land conveyance such as trucks, buses, cars,
jeeps tri-cycles, etc., sea crafts such as liners or
ships, and aircraft such as airplanes, transport
cargo, and people.
Communication refers to the services
rendered by telephones, cablegrams, telegrams,
and radiograms. Services need improvement.
5. COMMUNICATION OF FACTS AND IDEAS.
 Press, radio, television, the legitimate
stage, and movies are forms of media. Some
press reports and radio broadcasts tend to
be libelous and show intrigues and division
instead of unity.
6. UTILIZATION OF LEISURE TIME.
 With the appearance of more time-saving
labor devices in the market, the people can
have more leisure time.
7. EXPRESSION OF ETHICAL IMPULSES.
 This is the best expressed in human
relations: how a boss treats his subordinates,
how a subordinate deals with his superior, and
how a friend treats and greets his friend, giving
one what is due to him, and the like.
This is also shown in the exercise of some
traits or values such as honesty, punctuality,
fulfilling promises, humility, generosity and
kindness
8. EXPRESSION OF AESTHETIC IMPULSES.
 This is an expression and appreciation of
the beautiful. These impulses find expression
and appreciation in art such as painting,
sculpture, wood carving, architectural designs,
literature, music especially concerts, etc.
these activity evoke the happier side of the
emotion.
9. ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF
GOVERNMENT.
 This is a necessity because without
government, there would be chaos.
The government keeps peace and order and
protects the rights of the people granted by
law and the constitution.
10. CHANGES IN SOCIETY.
 Increased population demands greater
and improved economic goods. Modern
science and technology, equitable distribution
of the fruits of production especially capital
and labor and wise consumption of
consumer goods lead to increased
production.
a. Industrialization
 This means more industries, more factories, more
offices, more stores, more jobs, and economic progress
which are usually located in the cities.
b. Urbanization
 This is living at the outskirts or suburb's of the city
usually in subdivisions, a little bit far from the
places of work. But workers can easily reach their
places of work due to the fast means of transportation.
c. Improved transportation and Mobility of
population
 the improved means of transportation promote to a
great extent the mobility of the population. People can
travel far and wide very easily.
d. Working Mothers and children
 because of the pressure of economic necessity, there is
a tremendous increase in the number of mothers and
children working.
e. Desire for more consumer goods and
material things
 The appearance in the market of many types of
consumer goods and other material things has spurred the
desire of the people to own them or at least some of
them.
f. Overseas employment
 There is an increasing desire of Filipinos to work
abroad.
e. Increased desire of Education
 There is an ever increasing desire of the people to
acquire education. This may be due to the fact that the
parents have an intense desire not to allow their children
to go through the hardships they have gone through.

▸ Sociology attempts to study how
and why people are organized as a
society. It allows for a scientific study
of society as an organization, which
is of help in the formulation and
implementation of policies that
benefit society.

• It analyzes the structure of society and
studies the factors that contribute to
the creation of social groups.
• Sociology includes the study of
behavioral patterns, interactions, and
relationships among the individuals of
society, as well as their ethical and
moral values.

social institutions play in the
development of an individual.
These institutions are those
through which the society
functions. Examples include
family, school, church, and the
government.

It gives us an understanding of our
rights and duties as parts of
society and thus makes us better
citizens.

and their solutions. Studying
sociology builds our

and the measures needed to
