 FILM
• Another art which has risen to tremendous heights within the
last century is film or cinema.
• It’s early name was “Motion Pictures”.
• Involves a number of discrete stages including an
initial story, idea, or commission, through screenwriting, casting,
shooting, sound recording and reproduction, editing,
and screening the finished product before an audience that may
result in a film release and exhibition.
• Typically, it involves a large number of people, and can take
from a few months to several years to complete.
 FILM-MAKING
• Film-Making, because of its technical
complexity, involves entire teams of artists,
writers and production experts, supported by
technicians taking charge of the cameras,
lightning equipment, sets, props, costumes and
the like-all under the supervision of a film
director.
• Filmmaking takes place in many places around
the world in a range of economic, social,
and political contexts, and using a variety of
technologies and cinematic techniques.
 FILM DIRECTING
• The Director, like the painter and sculptor in
traditional art, who envisions the final effect of
the film on its viewers, visually, mentally and
emotionally. He or she conceptualizes the
scenes, directs the acting, supervises the
cinematography and finally the editing and
sound dubbing in much the same way as a
visual artist composes an artwork. Clearly,
however, the director does not do all these
alone.
 ACTING
• is an activity in which a story is told by means of its enactment
by an actor or actress who adopts a character—
in theatre, television, film, radio, or any other medium that
makes use of the mimetic mode.
• Modern arctor/actress, are expressing themselves through
mimicking or following what the directors told them to do.
• Acting involves a broad range of skills, including a well-
developed imagination, emotional facility, physical
expressivity, vocal projection, clarity of speech, and the ability to
interpret drama. Acting also often demands an ability to
employ dialects, accents, improvisation, observation and
emulation, mime, and stage combat.
 CINEMATOGRAPHY
• This captured the directors vision of each scene through camera
placement and movement, lighting and other special techniques.
• is the science or art of motion-picture photography by recording light
or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of
an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material
such as film stock.
• Cinematography finds uses in many fields of science and business as
well as for entertainment purposes and mass communication.
• The word "cinematography" was created from the Greek
words κίνημα (kinema), meaning "movement, motion"
and γράφειν (graphein) meaning "to record", together meaning
"recording motion." The word used to refer to the art, process, or job
of filming movies, but later its meaning was restricted to "motion
picture photography.“
 EDITING
• This was joined by film editing, the art of selecting the precise sections of
film, then sequencing and joining them to achieve the director’s desired
visual and emotional effect.
• Sound editing was also developed as films began to include more ambitious
effects beyond the dialogue and background music.
• The editing process can involve correction, condensation, organization, and
many other modifications performed with an intention of producing a correct,
consistent, accurate and complete work.
• is the process of selecting and preparing written, visual, audible,
and film media used to convey information.
• The editing process often begins with the director’s idea for the work itself,
continuing as a collaboration between the director and the editor as the work
is created. As such, editing can involve creative skills, human relations and a
precise set of methods.
 PRODUCTION/SET DESIGN
• Underlying all these was the art of production and set design.
• Is the set of all combinations of inputs and outputs that
comprise a technologically feasible way to produce. It is used as
part of profit maximization calculations
• This recreated in physical terms, through location, scenery, sets,
lighting , costumes and props, the mental that the director had
of how each scene should look, what period it should depict and
what atmosphere it should convey.
• This included creating worlds that did not exist as well as worlds
that were long gone, designing each production component
down to the very last detail.

 LINO BROCKA
• He directed “Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang” (1974), “Maynila;
Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag” (1975).
• He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and
significant Filipino filmmakers in the history of Philippine
cinema.
• In 1983, he founded the organization Concerned Artists of
the Philippines (CAP), dedicated to helping artists address
issues confronting the country.
• Brocka was openly gay and often
incorporated LGBT themes into his films.
• In 1997, he was posthumously given the National Artist of
the Philippines for Film award for "having made significant
contributions to the development of Philippine arts."
Lino Brocka
 MIKE DE LEON
• He directed the movies “Itim” (1976); “Sister Stella L”, (1984);
“Bayaning 3rd World” (1999).
• He was born in Manila on May 24, 1947 to Manuel de Leon and Imelda
Pamintuan.
• His interest in filmmaking began when he pursued a master's degree in
Art History at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
• De Leon's films are a full reflection of the Filipino psyche that sought
answer for questions on social class belonging, political absurdities,
and fragmentations in various forms. His first major full-length work
was, Itim (Black), in 1976.
• Philippine’s Urian Awards as one of the Ten Outstanding Films of the
Decade: 1970-1979.
• The film (Itim) also won him the best director award during the 1978
Asian Film Festival held in Sydney, Australia.
Mike de Leon
 ISHMAEL BERNAL
• Noted for his melodramas, particularly
with feminist and moral issues, he directed many
landmark Filipino films such as Nunal sa Tubig
(1975), City After
Dark (1980), Relasyon (1982), Himala (1982),
and Hinugot sa Langit (1985). He was declared
a National Artist of the Philippines in 2001.
• (30 September 1938 – 2 June 1996) was
a Filipino film, stage and television director, actor
and screenwriter.
Ishmael Bernal
 LAURICE GUILLEN
• Her work “Salome” (1981) earned international acclaim at the
Toronto International Film Festival.
• Her more recent films such as “Tanging Yaman” (2001), which
won Best Picture in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF),
“American Adobo” (2002), “Santa Santita” (2004), and “Sa’yo
Lamang (2010) all gained her recognition among the current
generation of Filipino moviegoers.
• A protégé of Lino Brocka, Guillen began her first major work as
a director with "Kasal" in 1979 with Hilda Koronel and
Christopher de Leon.
• Then with "Kung Akoy Iiwan Mo” with Nora Aunor in 1980.
Laurice Guillen
 MARILOU DIAZ ABAYA
• She captured the attention and respect of the viewing public
with powerful film such as “Jose Rizal” (1998), which perfectly
timed for the centennial celebration of Philippine Independence;
“Muro-ami” (1999), which bravely exposed the deadly practice of
using child-divers to pound for fish in the Philippines’ Coral
reefs; and “Bagong Buwan” (2001), which dealth with the human
cost of the Muslim-Christian conflict in Mindanao.
• Arguably her most famous work, José Rizal, featured actor and
2007 Philippine senatorial candidate César Montano playing the
national hero as an ordinary human being, artist, and struggling
doctor.
• Her body of work is a continuous examination of difficult social
problems in the country. Her works often deal with the lives of
the Filipino poor, women, and children who struggle to survive
under harsh conditions.
Marilou Diaz Abaya
 MARYO J. DELOS REYES
• The heartwarming drama film “Magnifico” won
for him the Best Director distinction at the 2003
FAMAS Awards and garnered other local and
international film awards as well.
• Delos Reyes continues to be active in both
televesion media, having become known for
well-loved teleseryes (Television Drama Series).

• Magnifico gained international acclaim as an indie film in major
international film festivals gaining 31 wins and 11 other
nominations.
• It won the Crystal Bear for the 2004 Berlin International Film
Festival Children's Category as well as the Deutsches
Kinderhilfswerk Grand Prix.
• In the same year, it also garnered seven major awards in the
FAMAS Awards, seven awards in the Gawad Urian Awards,

the FAP Awards in its home country.

• Mendoza was originally a production designer for
films, commercials and music videos and started
directing films in 2005.

of P) won him the Best Director award at the highly
prestigious Cannes Film Festival of 2009.
• His 2009 film ”Lola” won the award for Best Film at
the 6th Dubai International Film Festival.
• His 2012 film ”Captive” was shown in competition
at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in
February 2012.
