motionless.
 MASS is the measure of the
amount of matter in an object.

 It is measured in Kilograms
 More mass means more inertia
“The more inertia a body has, the more
difficult it is to start moving. It will
also be more difficult to stop the body
if it is originally in motion.”
1st Law of Motion
(Law of Inertia)

An object at rest will stay at

rest, unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force.
1st Law of Motion
(second part)
 An object in motion will remain in motion
at constant speed in a straight path unless
acted upon by a net force/unbalanced force.
If objects in motion tend to stay in
motion, why don’t moving objects keep
moving forever?
Things don’t keep moving forever because
there’s almost always an unbalanced force
acting upon it.
Balanced force

Equal forces in opposite

directions produce no motion
Unbalanced force

Unequal opposing forces

produce an unbalanced force
causing motion
A book sliding across a table slows
down and stops because of the force of
friction.

If you throw a ball upwards it will

eventually slow down and fall
because of the force of gravity.
In outer space, away from gravity and any
sources of friction, a rocket ship launched
with a certain speed and direction would
keep going in that same direction and at that
same speed forever.
 “An object at rest will remain at rest and
when an object in motion will continue to
move with constant velocity unless acted
upon by an unbalanced external force”.
A passenger sitting in the rear of
a bus claims that he was injured
when the driver slammed on the
brakes, causing a suitcase at the
front to come flying towards him.
If you were the judge in this case,
what disposition would you make
and why?
“What will happen if the
passengers were not wearing
their seatbelt and the car was
bought to a sudden halt
while the car was traveling
at 80km/hr.?
It is better to be safe than sorry
class.
Fasten your seatbelts at all times.
Your safety is everyone
responsibility, especially you.
Newtons’s 1st Law and You

Don’t let this be you. Wear seat belts.

Because of inertia, objects (including you) resist changes
in their motion. When the car going 80 km/hour is stopped
by the brick wall, your body keeps moving at 80 m/hour.
Directions: Answer the following situations.
1. Which of these vehicles moving at the same speed is
difficult to stop-a car, a bus, or a train? Explain your
answer.

2. When you are inside a bus or jeepney, what do you

experience when the vehicle starts from rest? What do you
also experience when, while the vehicle is moving fast, it
stops suddenly? Explain these experiences in terms of
inertia.

3.Ariel is a good racer of both the car and the single motor.
He is planning to join the national competition for each
event. The problem is- both events have the same schedule.
If you were Ariel, which competition would you choose?
Justify your answer.
