First Point of Contact

• First to have contact with the waste generator

• First to screen the waste/ AFR
• First to have physical chemical data on the waste
• First to visit the facility and see process which generates the
waste
• First to have contact with the waste/ AFR
• First to transport waste to our facilities (considered as Pick-up and
Delivery Drivers under HAZMAT)

Waste Sampling at the Customer

• Waste sampling is to be conducted only by trained personnel

• Written sampling work instructions are required
• Sampling equipment is required
• Correct PPE is required
• You can stop and do a “take 5” at the customer site, think before
you act
• If unsure either ask the customer to take the sample in your
presence or ask a Geocycle chemist to accompany you to the
customer
• If in doubt contact regional support

Customer Sites

• Sometimes this

• And sometimes this

Before Entering the Customer Site

• Some customers will require visitors to attend site inductions

• Some customers will require visitors to be fully escorted when on
site
• Gather site OH&S information from your customer contact
• Ask for a safety data sheet
• Assist the customer to begin filling in the waste profile form (see
templates)

At the Customer’s Site

• Take digital photos of the site

• Take digital photos of the waste
• Prepare for sampling

Sales Sampling Equipment

• Sales sampling will require: scoop sampler (in 3 parts, screw

together), drum bung removal key, bucket, screwdriver, pliers, rags
• Also needed will be sample containers, labels, markers and pens

Before Sampling

• Not all drums need to be sampled, but a representative sample

needs to be obtained, at least 10% of drum need to be sampled
(note all drums will be sampled at time of delivery)
• Check chemical labels, they contain information on chemical
hazards, spill & leak control, first aid, PPE, fire fighting, odours
• Check if the drum is under pressure
• Check if the drum is hot
• Check if there are any chemical reactions
• If unsure, check with customer

Obtain The Sample of Waste

Waste Sampling

• Assemble the drum scoop sampler

• Use the drum key to remove the bung
• Liquids, slurries and sludges are sampled with the drum scoop
sampler
• Solids are sampled with a screwdriver or flat blade
• For representative sampling of large numbers of drums, a cross
section of drums are sampled, contents are mixed in the bucket
• Contents are then decanted into the HDPE sample container
• Label the container
• Have transport documents for laboratory samples

Guidelines for Packaging and Containers

DOs
• Use standard containers or sample bottles
• Use hazard labelling system
• Use secondary containment
• Have shipping papers and SDS
• Have a first aid kit
• Have a fire extinguisher
• Have a spill kit

DO NOTs
• Accept waste samples in the mail
• Use samples contained in substandard
containers
• Accept waste samples without hazard labels
or papers

Other Package Types

• Small containers of waste, can be directly collected as a sample of

the waste, for example a one litre container of paint
• Never use food containers for waste sampling
• Bulk waste is sampled as per drums of waste

After Sampling

• Replace the drum bungs

• Clean all equipment with rags
• Clean the sampling area
• Ask the customer to dispose of left over sample material in the
bucket
• Wash your hands
• Put away all sampling equipment
• Put away all PPE

Transport of Sales Samples

• Transport samples directly to the laboratory for analysis and safe

storage

20 © 2007 Holcim/Switzerland, John Jones HGRS

Pre-Qualification Analysis

• For pre-qualification analysis all available chemical and physical

information must be collected from the customer
• Transport samples directly to the laboratory, watch for odours
• If a sample is to be transported by somebody else, use a “chain of
custody” form
• Laboratory analysis pro-forma must be completed
• Provide all paperwork to the laboratory manager
• If there are any special handling or analysis requirements discuss
directly with the laboratory manager
• Always work in the laboratory fume cupboards

Laboratory Analysis

• Laboratory performs necessary chemical and physical analyses

• Laboratory managers reviews all analysis results
• Laboratory report is forward to the multi-disciplinary team
• Team performs risk assessment and decide how to proceed with
new wastes
