WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE?
1. A word that indicates a quality of the person or thing referred to by a noun.
2. Adjectives are describing a words. Large, grey, friendly are the examples of
adjectives. In the example below, these adjectives are used to describe an
elephant.
1. A large elephant
2. Grey elephant
3. Friendly elephant
The word elephant is a noun. Adjectives are added to nouns to state what
kind, what color, which one or how many. Adjectives are said to modify nouns
and are necessary to make the meanings of sentences clearer or more exact.
WHAT IS A PHRASE?

1. Phrase is two or more words that function together as a


group to form a single unit of meaning.
2. A group of words without a verb, especially one that forms
part of a sentence.
WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE PHRASE?

A group of words which act like a single adjective to


modify a noun as a post modifier.
Examples:
• The girl is very beautiful.
• The man in a red hat is a detective.

1. ADVERBS OF DEGREE + ADJECTIVES
The most common form of adjective phrases is the combination between adverbs of degree and
descriptive adjective. Some of the degrees are too, so, very, really, extremely, quite, etc.
Examples :
1. It is too hot to go to out, let’s stay at home.
2. John looked so happy this morning.
3. Your performance was very great.
4. The scenery in Toba lake is really wonderful.
5. Having a long trip, I feel extremely tired.
6. Your penalty kick was quite satisfying.
2. INFINITIVE PHRASE
An infinitive is the stem form of a verb usually preceded by the particle to,
e.g. To fly, to play, etc. As an adjective, an infinitive phrase modifies a noun or
pronoun referent. The infinitive phrase is composed of the infinitive itself followed
by any complements and/ modifiers. An infinitive phrase functioning adjectivally
follows its noun or pronoun referent.
Examples :
1. The candidate to elect next week is Will Peterson.
2. I have a decision to make before evening.
3. PARTICIPLE PHRASE
A participle is a verb form, or verbal, that functions as an adjective,
modifying a noun or pronoun. Participles may be present participles (verbs ending
in –ing) or past participles (verbs ending in –ed, -en, -d, -t or –n). A participle
phrase consists of a participle followed by any other complements and/or
modifiers. A participle phrase precedes follows the noun or pronoun modified.
Examples :
1. He is the man killing that snake.
2. The candidate interviewed yesterday was excellent.
4. Prepositional
Functioning as an adjective follows (usually immediately) its noun or pronoun
referent, since adjective phrases (with exception of the participial phrase) always
function as post modifiers.
Examples:
1. The girl from the market has lovely hair
2. The man in a red hat turned and left the room
