• A hurricane also known as a
tropical cyclone is a rapidly
rotating storm system
• strong winds, and a spiral
arrangement of thunderstorms
that produce heavy rain.
• Depending on its location and
strength, a tropical cyclone is
referred to by different names,
including

•Hurricanes begin as tropical
storms over the warm moist
waters of the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans near the equator.
(Near the Phillippines and the
China Sea, hurricanes are called
typhoons.)

rises until enormous amounts of
heated moist air are twisted

• Before the hurricane, learn about the
emergency procedures established by
your community, and prepare a personal
family action plan.
• Keep emergency supplies on hand such
as

• battery-operated radios

• and flashlights.

• If authorities issue an evacuation


order, follow the route they suggest.

•Know your area's risk of hurricanes.
•Sign up for your community's warning
system.
•If you are at risk for flash flooding,
watch for warning signs such as heavy
rain.
•Practice going to a safe shelter for high
winds, such as a FEMA safe room or ICC
500 storm shelter.
•Leave low lying areas.
•Protect windows with
plywood boards, or storm
shutters.
•Secure outside objects.
•Make sure you have
plenty of fuel and water.
•Have several days supply
of food and water for
each family member.
