S.No. Sound Path Time Delay Gap Listening Condition
Difference (ft) (ms)

1. <23 <20 Excellent for speech and music

2. 23 to 34 20 to 30 Good for speech, Fair for Music

3. 34 to 50 30 to 45 Marginal (blurred)

4. 50 to 68 45 to 60 Unsatisfactory

5. >68 > 60 Poor, echo if strong

Where path difference is the difference in length of direct path and reflected path
from the source to the listener.

Path Difference = Reflected Path – Direct Path

la

For an echo to be heard, there should be a proper reflection of sound with

sufficient strength.
Example:

Location 1 - Path Difference : (11 + 18la– 12) ‘ = 17’ < 23’

Location 2 – Path difference : (16 + 26 – 33) ’ = 9’ < 23’
Aim:
To identify the sound quality at 10 different locations in a rectangular auditorium seating
1000 people.

Seating widths – 1m,

1.5m(at intervals)
Aisles – 1m,
0.5m(at intervals)

 A multiple aisle arrangement will have maximum 14 to 16 chairs per row with aisle way
access at both ends.

 If there is a single aisle access, the number of chairs are limited to 7 or 8 per row.

 Average area per person - 0.7sqm.
