Objective

 To perform various laboratory tests to check suitability of

materials for construction of pavement.

 To examine the variation in the compressive strength of

Concrete by using NAC (Natural Aggregate Concrete) & RAC
(Recycled Aggregate Concrete).

 To design the PQC mix for M40 grade of concrete as per IS:
10262 : 2009
Rigid Pavements

 Rigid Pavement resist the loads

of traffic.

 Distributes the reduced stresses

uniformly to the area under the
slab.

 This National Highway will reduce

the heavy traffic flow as seen
currently.
Reason to construct Rigid
Pavement

 Low maintenance and have a long life span.

 Most durable and having high resistance to environmental

condition.

 Their load carrying capacity is more.

 They provide an impervious , ductless and sanitary surface.

 It has high compressive strength which distribute the load over a

wide area of soil.

 Deflection is very small and have high flexural strength.

Function of Dowel Bars

 Dowel bars are short steel bars that provide a mechanical

connection between slabs without restricting horizontal joint
movement.

 Spacing – 300 mm
 Diameter – 32 mm
 Length – 450 mm
 Depth of Laying – 140 mm

Function of Tie Bars

 Tie bars are either deformed steel bars or

connectors used to hold the faces of abutting slabs
in contact.

RMC (Ready Mix Concrete)
 It is concrete that is manufactured in a batch
plant, according to a set of engineered mix
design.
 On site capacity of RMC plant were 125 and
45 meter cube .

Need of Crushed Sand

 Concrete mainly consist of 35% of sand.

 Natural sand world consumption is around Number of million tons

per year making it scarce and limited .

 Natural sand contains high Percentage of inorganic materials which

affects the strength, durability and reinforcement there reduces the
life span .

 So crushed sand is good substituent & it controls gradation with

rough surface texture and flatter face.

Experimental Work on Concrete by
Replacement of sand & Aggregate

 The Experimental study on concrete was

conducted in 3 phases:
1) Crushed sand : Natural aggregate
2) Natural sand : Natural aggregate
3) Crushed sand : Demolished aggregate

 For each phase 12 cubes were prepared.

 Concrete Used : M15 (1:2:4) & M20 (1:1.5:3)

 Water Cement Ratio : 0.5

Conclusion
 Highway rigid pavement play an important role in convenience warning
and direction & trend shows that Rigid Pavement are prime choice
than that of Flexible pavement.
 The design of pavement is the upgraded form for the better and
convenient traffic flow.
 Concrete containing crushed sand has more compressive strength
than natural sand.
 Replacement of 20% of natural aggregate by demolished material
have nearly same strength as that of natural aggregate concrete.
 For complete utilization of demolished materials, various polymers
must be added into the concrete.
 The comparison of Compressive Strength of different combinations of
concrete is as follows:

Natural Sand Crushed Sand

& Natural < Recycled Aggregate < & Natural
Aggregate Aggregate
