Medieval Period
• was lasted from the 700 – 1400 AD that
started with fall of the Roman Empire.
• is also known as the Middle Ages or “Dark
Ages”.
• the Middle Ages is the middle period of the
three traditional divisions of Western
history: classical antiquity, the medieval
period, and the modern period.

• there is one word that describe the culture in
the Middle Age and that is barbaric.
• there was a lot that occurred during the
middle ages:
 plague
 war
 famine
 literacy problem

influenced Europe’s culture and political
affairs.

and medical care, and inspiration for art, culture and philosophy.

Roman Catholic Church.

Gregory I, who made this the
approved music of the
Catholic Church.
• was also known as plain chant
or plain song.

• MONOPHONIC
• is a melody typically sung by a single singer or played by a
single instrument player without accompanying harmony
or chords.
• FREE METER
• is a type of musical anti meter free from musical time and
time signature. It is used when a piece of music has no
discernible be. instead, the rhythm is intuitive and free
flowing.

Roman Empire that spread
over Europe.

• Secular music which was not bound by Catholic traditions
emerged. Most of these songs were performed across Europe
by groups of musicians called Troubadours.
TROUBADOURS – is a poet-musician who first appeared in
the late 11 century.
- a travelling musicians who performed in
towns and courts for their living, had
long been providing entertainment.

• Tells chivalry and courtly love
• Chivalry - qualities expected of an ideal knight.

 was born in Arras France.
 he was a son of a well known
citizen of Arras, Henri de la Halle
.
 was a troubadour, poet and
musician.
 he received his education at the
Cistercian Abbey of Vaucelles.
