The chairman of Wipro Limited, one of India's largest software development company. Completed his initial education at St. Mary's School, Mumbai. Was forced to leave his studies at the age of 21 to take over the family business when his father M.H. Premji, suddenly died in 1966. First annual general meeting of the company, made him all the more determined to make Wipro a success story. THE REST IS HISTORY. Today, Wipro Technologies is the largest independent R&D service provider in the world. HONOURS AND AWARDS In 2000, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education In 2005,Government of India honored Azim Premji with Padma Bhushan. Recognized by Business Week as one of the Greatest Entrepreneurs. Awarded a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.), an honorary degree, from the Aligarh Muslim University on the 18th of June, 2008. In 2009, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut for his outstanding philanthropic work. PHILANTHROPIC INTERESTS Plans to set up a world-class university to train teachers who will fan out to the teacher training institutes in India's 600 districts. Started nine years ago and funded solely by Premji, the foundation was given stock valued at "much more than" Rs 450 crore as estimated by a newspaper. “Mission 10X”, is focused on making India's engineering students more employable in the IT industry. “Wipro Cares”, provides disaster relief, lending a hand after the earthquake in Gujarat or the floods in Orissa, for instance. Only if others could have treated their family fortune more as an issue of public responsibility and less as some personal privilege India would have been a better place for all. SOURCE OF INSPIRATION Premji is known for his modesty and frugality in spite of his wealth. The Azim Premji Foundation was set up with financial resources contributed by himself. Azim Premji Foundation says it "dedicates itself to the cause of Universalization of Elementary Education in India”. Also plans to give away most of his money during his lifetime. "To those to whom much is given, much has to be given back." "Even if I was to give my children a small part of my wealth, it would be more than they can digest in many lifetimes," Azim Premji said.
