What is Soil?
Soil is the upper most layer of the
Earth. It originates from parent rock
and contains both organic and
inorganic substances.
Soils are fertile in respect to their
effectiveness in producing specific
vegetation types or associations.
Why soil is critical natural
resources?
Answer:
-Because of soil erosion, soil depletion, soil
salinization, soil desertification and
mismanagement of land.
SOIL EROSION
Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process
that affects all landforms.

Effects of Soil Erosion

•Reduces the amount of soil in an area.

•Causes a soil to lose its fertility.
•Affect the water quality and fish habitats.
•Sediments with perticides add to pollution.
SOIL DEPLETION
Soil depletion is the removal of nutrients, biological
diversity, or structural quality due to improper extractive
practices.

Effects of Soil Depletion

•Soil compaction
•Low organic matter
•Loss of soil structure
•Poor internal drainage
•Salinization
•Soil acidity
SOIL SALINIZATION
The process of increasing the salt content.

Effects of Soil Salinization

•Decrease plant growth
•Water quality resulting in lower crop
yield
•Degraded stock water supplies
• Excess salt affects overall soil health
•Reducing productivity.
SOIL DESERTIFICATION
Desertification is a type of land degradation in which a
relatively dry land region becomes increasingly arid,
typically losing its bodies of water as well as vegetation
and wildlife.

Effects of Soil Desertification

•Reduces the ability of land to support life

•Affecting wild species, domestic animals agricultural crops
and people
QUESTIONS!
How is texture used to classify soils?

Soil texture analysis is the

measurement of the proportions of
the various sizes of
the soil particles.
Can you give one circumstance in which water found in soil?

Groundwater is the water present

beneath Earth's surface in soil pore
spaces and in the fractures of rock
formations.
What factors are involved in the formation of soils?

Soils are formed through the interaction

of five major factors: time, climate,
parent material, topography and relief,
and organisms.
Which is the most important factor that is involved in the
formation of soils on a global scale?

Temperature
What are the most important effects of parent material on
soil?
•Weathering
•Pedogenesis
•Leaching
•Aggrading soils
•Degrading soils
