Lessons Learned from the
Exercise
 Differences in perception lead to prejudice;
 One has to humbly accept mistakes
 One has to be prudent and patient in analysis before
making judgment
 Good decision can best be achieved through open
discussion and assessment
 Nobody has the monopoly of truth
 We should be open to changes and new ideas

Leadership Defined
• The Ability to influence a group towards the achievement
of goals. (Robbins,Bergman, Stagg, & Coulter 2000,
p. 593)
• Leadership is a reciprocal relationship between those
who lead and those who decide to follow. Any discussion
of leadership must attend to the dynamics of this
relationship. Strategies, tactics, skills and practices are
empty unless we understand the fundamental human
aspirations that connect leaders and their constituents. If
there is no underlying need for this relationship, then
there is no need for leaders (Kouzes and Posner 1993,
p. 1).

organizational behaviour an
interesting philosophical choice. It
is a requisite for survival’

Value-Driven Leadership
 Values are:
‘the guiding principles in our lives with
respect to the personal and the social end
we desire – such as salvation or peace –
and with respect to moral conduct and
personal competence – honesty and
imagination’
(Kouzes & Posner 1993, p.60)

Credibility & Trust
Credibility and credit:
credo – ‘I trust or I believe’
Trust: ‘a relationship in which we give another
person powers in caring for something we value. In
doing so we accept our vulnerability to the other’s ill
will while maintaining the confidence that they will
not in practice harm us’.
(Coopey 1998, p. 365)

Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
The ability to ‘manage one’s own feelings and emotions, to be sensitive to
and influence other key people, and to balance one’s motive and drives with
conscious and ethical behaviour’ (Dulexics 2000, p 1)

Benefits of EQ:
•EQ interventions offer the opportunity for self discovery by raising
individual awareness and building self confidence and the ability to take risks
•Enables individuals to find a balance between their inner drives, values and
their purpose in life
•EQ programs have a dramatic effect in facilitating behavioural change and
accelerated learning

Spirituality
Spirituality is ‘something that transcends our
ordinary life’ and is experienced in ‘connection
with something larger than ourselves…but we
know that it is beyond the material…a sense of
connection to a higher spirit…may or may not
be associated with a particular religion… a
connection to a set of ideals or ethics, for some
a connection to mankind’.

Value-Driven Leadership
Competencies
 Honesty
Being honest in any relationship requires a high level of
self-assessment and self-regulation by facing our own
emotions and failings and using that knowledge to create
better relationships. Values should be an essential
ingredient in developing personal and social
competencies. Honesty and trust are closely interwoven,
and there is endless research evidence supporting the
importance of trust in both leadership and management.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Value-Driven Leadership
Competencies
 Sustainability

Orientation towards the future has many elements.

Intellectual abilities assist in developing long-term
strategies, but it also entails the ability to be adaptable
and flexible in setting goals, goals that are grounded in
shared values. Requires the ability to empathically
understand the needs of others, and to work ‘outside the
box’.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Value-Driven Leadership
Competencies
 Commitment

This is about developing on-going enthusiasm

and motivation for goal attainment. Requires
high level personal and social competencies to
elicit positive and optimistic behaviours. Also
requires an understanding of values in
differentiating between inspiring/motivating and
manipulating

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Value-Driven Leadership
Competencies
 Understanding/Supportive

Using past experiences to establish

reliability for others to follow. Requires
personal and social competencies, and the
ability to work against convention as a
change catalyst and developing
relationships based on shared values.

Factors to Become Real Leaders
 Character – who they are
 Relationship – who they know
 Knowledge – what they know
 Intuition – what they feel
 Experience – where they have been
 Past Successes – what have they done
 Ability – what they can do

SAVE ME Movement

Four Factors of Leadership
 Followers – factor that determines the kind of
leadership
 Leader – the central figure who perfectly
understand who he is, what he knows, what he
can do
 Communication – the means of which values,
interests, motivations and directions are
manifested
 Situation/Setting – the state that serves as the
basis and object of judgment for consideration
and action

Road to Great Leadership
 Challenge the Process – find process that you
believe needs to be improved the most
 Inspire a Shared Vision – share your vision in
words that are understandable
 Enable Others to Act – give them the tools and
methods to solve the problems
 Model the Way – when the process get tough, get
your hands dirty. A boss tells what others should
do, a leader shows that it can be done
 Encourage the Heart – share the glory with your
followers heart while keeping the pains within you

Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead

 Leadership in the past. The best predictor

of the future is the past.
 The capacity to create or catch vision. A
person who doesn't feel the thrill of
challenge is not a potential leader.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 A constructive spirit of discontent. There's a big
difference in being constructively discontent and
being critical. If somebody says, "There's got to
be a better way to do this? Have you ever
thought about what that better way might be?" If
he says no, he is being critical, not constructive.
But if he says yes, he's challenged by a
constructive spirit of discontent. That's the un-
scratchable itch. It is always in the leader.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 People locked in the status quo are not
leaders.
 A willingness to take responsibility.
Carrying responsibility should not
intimidate because the joy of
accomplishment-the sensational feeling of
contributing to other people-is what
leadership is all about.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 Practical ideas. Highly original people are
often not good leaders because they are
unable to judge their output; they need
somebody else to say, "This will work" or
"This won't." Not everybody with practical
ideas is a leader, but leaders seem to be
able to identify which ideas are practical
and which aren't.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 A completion factor. I might test somebody's
commitment by putting him or her on a task
force. The person who grabs hold of the problem
and won't let go, like a dog with a bone, has
leadership potential. This quality is critical in
leaders, for there will be times when nothing but
one's iron will says, "Keep going." Quitters don’t
have the ability to get things done. The half-
cooked meal isn't good enough.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 Mental and Psychological Toughness. No one
can lead without being criticized or without
facing discouragement. A potential leader needs
a mental toughness Leadership creates a
certain separation from one's peers. The
separation comes from carrying responsibility
that only you can carry. A leader must be able to
keep his or her own counsel until the proper
time.

SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 Peer respect. Peer respect doesn't reveal ability,
but it can show character and personality.
Trammell Crow, said, "It's tough enough to
succeed when everybody wants you to succeed.
People who don't want you to succeed are like
weights in your running shoes." Maxey Jarmen
used to say, "It isn't important that people like
you. It's important that they respect you. They
may like you but not follow you. If they respect
you, they'll follow you, even if perhaps they don't
like you."
SAVE ME Movement
Leadership Institute
Ways to Identify if Someone is Capable
of Learning to Lead
 Family respect. The family's feelings toward
someone reveal much about his or her potential
to lead.
 A quality that makes people listen to them.
Potential leaders have a "holding court" quality
about them. When they speak, people listen.
Other people may talk a great deal, but nobody
listens to them. They're making a speech;
they're not giving leadership. I take notice of
people to whom others listen.

Diagnosis of our National Illness
 The Philippines is afflicted with interlocking diseases
of poverty, passivity, graft and corruption,
exploitative patronage, factionalism, political
instability, love for intrigue, lack of discipline, lack of
patriotism, and the desire for instant self-
gratification.
 This sickness is moral in nature – the bottom of
our economic problems and political instability is the
weakness and corruption of the moral foundations of
our society. (Senate Special Committee on Moral Recovery, 1991)

PGMA’s Prognosis
 The greatest obstacle that we as a nation must
overcome is inside us. The enemy to beat is
ourselves: when we spread division rather than
unity; when we put ourselves above country and
profit above fairness; when we think the worst of
those with who we should be working for the
common good; and when we wallow in despair
rather than to rise to achievement – indeed,
when we make politics replace patriotism in our
country’s hour of need.” – President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo

FORMULA FOR A GENUINE CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT
When I was little
I dreamt about changing the world but it struck me for it seemed impossible
WORLD
So I reduce my dream somehow
And thought only about changing my country
NATION Again, to my surprise, that too seemed unattainable
To overcome my frustrations due to the inability to reach my goals
I concentrated in changing my family, thinking that may be this time I could
SOCIETY make a difference
But then again, I failed
And now as I lie on my deathbed
FAMILY I suddenly realized that if I had changed my self first, then by example I
would have changed my family
From this inspiration and encouragement
SELF I figured I could have better my country and who knows, I may have changed
the world
