DEFINITIONS OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
• The psychological specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive mental and
behavioral health care for individuals and families; consultation to agencies and
communities; training, education and supervision; and research-based practice.

• One of the most popular subfields within the discipline of psychology. It involves the
application of psychological theories, principles and methods to the assessment,
diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and other forms of abnormal behaviour.

• A professional specialty concerned with diagnosing and treating diseases of the brain,
emotional disturbance, and behavior problems.
2.) HOW ARE CLINICAL
PSYCHOLOGISTS DIFFERENT FROM

• Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are mental health professionals and licensed


medical doctors who provide assessment, diagnosis and
treatment of mental health disorders. They generally work in
private or group practice, although some also work in other
settings.
• Social Workers

A social worker can work in direct services, helping people


cope with problems related to poverty, legal issues or human
rights. Or, they can work in the clinical field, where they
diagnose and treat mental, behavioral or emotional health
issues.
• School Psychologists

School Psychology delves into specialized areas with its core


knowledge found rooted very much within psychology and education
combined. All these findings are also in relation to the cultural contexts
of those needing help within the learning process of the education
system.
• Professional Counselor

A counseling psychologist is a psychology professional who helps


patients or clients deal with life problems. Often, this means
providing advice on how to resolve issues effectively, improve
communication and enhance the health of social relationships. A
counseling psychologist may teach a client new coping strategies and
help him or her determine what resources, such as personal support
systems and community services, they can use.

• Consult reference material such as textbooks, manuals, and journals
in order to identify symptoms, to make diagnoses, and to develop

substance abuse, and family situations, in order to modify behavior
and/or to improve personal, social, and vocational adjustment.
• Develop and implement individual treatment plans, specifying type,
frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy.
• Discuss the treatment of problems with clients.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling or treatments, and the accuracy
and completeness of diagnoses, then modify plans and diagnoses as
necessary.
• Identify psychological, emotional, or behavioral issues, and diagnose
disorders, using information obtained from interviews, tests, records, and
reference materials.
• Interact with clients to assist them in gaining insight, defining goals, and
planning action to achieve effective personal, social, educational, and
vocational development and adjustment.
• Observe individuals at play, in group interactions, or in other contexts to
detect indications of mental deficiency, abnormal behavior, or
maladjustment.
