 At the end of Presentation you will be
able to Answer basic questions related
to RCC introduction

RCC
 1.What is RCC?

Reinforced concrete, or RCC, is concrete that contains

embedded steel bars, plates, or fibers that strengthen
the material.

1/8/2016 3
RCC
 2. Why we provide reinforcement?

The compressive strength of concrete and the tensile

strength of steel form a strong bond to resist these
stresses over a long span. Plain concrete is not suitable
for most construction projects because it cannot easily
withstand the stresses created by vibrations, wind, or
other forces.

RCC
 3.Why steel is prefer for reinforcement?

In RCC there is one property of the both Concrete and Steel

which is similar and that is 'The coefficient of thermal
expansion'
This coefficient of concrete is similar to that of steel,
eliminating large internal stresses due to differences in
thermal expansion or contraction.
There is no other material that has this property similar
with the cement. Hence, we have not found any substitute
for steel.

 4. What are different types of bars?
 Main bars : Long bars , longitudinal bar
 Temperature bars :
Steel rods placed horizontally in concrete slabs for pre
vention of cracks due to temperature changes
 Stirrups : in beam stirrups resist shear cracks / tension

 8. What is pre-stress concrete?

Concrete in which reinforcing steel bars are stretched

and anchored to compress it and thus increase its
resistance to stress

 9. What is post stress concrete?

Post tensioning is a technique for

reinforcingconcrete. Post-tensioning tendons,
which are prestressing steel cables inside plastic ducts
or sleeves, are positioned in the forms before
theconcrete is placed.

RCC
 10.What are different covers ? Why we provide cover?

1.to protect the steel reinforcement bars(rebars) from

environmental effects to prevent their corrosion
2. to provide thermal insulation, which protects the
reinforcement bars from fire
3. to give reinforcing bars sufficient embedding to enable
them to be stressed without slipping

25 mm in beam
40 mm in column
20mm for slab

RCC
 11. Plain bars or deformed bars?

Plain bar : no protrusions/ bumps

deformed bar : protrusions/bumps increases bond

therefore no slipping of rebar

 14 Anchorage in Concrete ?

Reinforced concrete [RC] is concrete in which

reinforcement bars, reinforcement grids, plates or
fibers are embedded to create bond and thus to
strengthen the concrete in tension

RCC
 16 What is behavior of , concrete steel, Explained by
Hook’s law?

Hooke's law also applies when a straight steel bar

or concrete beam, supported at both ends, is bent by a
weight F placed at some intermediate point. The
displacement X in this case is the deviation of the
beam, measured in the transversal direction, relative
to its unloaded shape.

RCC
 Modulus of elasticity of steel= 29000 ksi
 Modulus of elasticity of concrete= 57000√ fc
 Concrete fails if strain ˃ 0.003
