What is ‘Landfill Leachate’?

 A leachate is any liquid that, in the course of passing through matter, extracts
soluble or suspended solids, or any other component of the material through
which it has passed.
 Leachate from a landfill varies widely in composition depending on the age of
the landfill and the type of waste that it contains.
 It contains both dissolved and suspended material.
Composition of Landfill Leachate
 Landfill  mixture of municipal, commercial, and mixed industrial waste
 Characterized as a water-based solution of four groups of contaminants
 Dissolved organic matter (alcohols, acids, aldehydes, short chain sugars etc.)
 inorganic macro components (common cations and anions including sulfate,
chloride, iron, aluminium, zinc and ammonia)
 Heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Cu, Hg)
 Xenobiotic organic compounds such as halogenated organics, (PCBs, dioxins,
etc.)

Factors Affecting Durability

Quality of the Concrete Subjected Environment
• Water/Cement Ratio • Severe Environment for Concrete
• Size and Hardeness of Aggregates • Concrete Tanks subjected to:
• Air Entrainment • Wet-Dry Cycling
• Construction Practises • Freeze – Thaw Cycling
(Consolidation, Cover and Curing) • Chemical Attack
• Abrasion

High Quality Concrete

Low Permeability

Relatively Crack Free

Slower Rate of Deterioration than Poor Concrete

 Abrasion
Abrasive effects of waterborne silt, sand, gravel and other debris

Abrasion damage

Causing to Erode

 Chemical Attack
 Acidic And Low pH water  Dissolves Cement Matrix  Concrete becomes
Weakened

Protection
Corrosion Protection
Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor
 It moves as a liquid through the concrete matrix via capillary action
 Migrates in a vapor phase throughout the concrete pore structure.
 Ionic attraction with embedded metals  forms a protective molecular layer.
 This film prevents corrosive elements from further reacting with the
reinforcement.
 Organic Type: Amine Carboxylates and Amine Alcohols

Hydrophilic Crystalline Materials
 It absorb and utilize water to catalyse and react with with cement particles to
produce elongated crystalline structures deep within the pores and capillary
tracts
 Impermeable water barrier with long lastingintergral waterproofing

Corrosion Protection
Hydrophobic Materials
 Hydrophobic or water repellent products repel water by increasing
hydrophobicity.
 They reduce absorption but are not enough to resist significant water
pressure.

Construction Systems - CHRYSO®Proof PU

 Single component, bitumen / coal tar free high solid content Polyurethane
resin which confirms to ASTM C-836-95 & ASTM C – 898-95
 Can be applied by brush, roller or squeezee
 No root penetration through the hardened coating (CHRYSO®Proof PU AR)
 High Degree of Chemical Resistance
 On drying CHRYSO®Proof PU forms a seamless protective and waterproof
membrane.
 Being viscous it does not sag when applied on vertical surfaces.
 CHRYSO®Proof PU has excellent adhesion to dry as well as primed surfaces
of concrete, tile, plaster, well prepared metal surfaces.
 Cured membranes of CHRYSO®Proof PU remain highly flexible even at
extremes temperature range (-40°C to 120°C).
 Does not generate gas within the film during hardening
 Using suitable primer, CHRYSO®Proof PU can be applied on concrete, steel,
aluminium, GRP Plastics, wood, SPF, etc.
