"If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble." I muttered to
myself softly. I crept slowly down the stairs and tried to walk casually into the
kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from
her "dish-washing", "where are you going?" I answered back without hesitation, "I'm
going to the garden to play." After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief.
My plan had worked out fine so far. I scaled the fence and jumped onto the muddy
field next to my house and started running towards the bus-stop at top speed. I dived
into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. When I woke up, I was in an
empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realised
that I was in a hospital. I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I
ever want to show off again.
1. NARRATIVE ESSAY - TELLING A STORY
•The writer tells a story about a real-life experience
•usually written in the first person
•challenges students to think and write about themselves
•A well-crafted narrative essay will also build towards
drawing a conclusion.
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do is in harmony.” This is A
quote by Mahatma Gandhi which is commonly used around the world to describe what
happiness is. The disciplines of psychology, philosophy, biology, and religious studies
have all tried to define what happiness is. Let us draw from these different fields of
studies to try A better understanding of what happiness feel like. According to Joan
Chittister, a Benedictine nun, happiness is not measured by the amount of success one
enjoys but rather a quality that should be learned (2011). In the modern times that we are
living in. Happiness, however, is made up from experiences that satisfy us on a deeper
level and brings an overwhelming feeling of contentment.
2. DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY - PAINTING A
PICTURE

•describe a person, place, object, or even memory of special
significance.
•The writer should show, not tell, through the use of colourful
words and sensory details.
Expressed anger is not only damaging to your relationships, but also to your
health. There are specific conditions that anger creates within the human body that
negatively affects our well-being. These effects are usually said to be risks to your heart,
higher risks of stroke, a weaker immune system, an increase in anxiety, being more prone
to depression, weaker lungs, and a shorter lifespan. Sometimes when we are angry, we can
feel our heart pump harder. This is not coincidence. According to everyday health, “most
physically damaging is anger’s effect on your cardiac health. “In the two hours after an
angry outburst, the chance of having a heart attack doubles,” says Chris Aiken, MD, an
instructor in clinical psychiatry at the wake forest university school of medicine and
director of the mood treatment center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina” (strong, debbie).
It is amazing that just by getting angry, it can mean that a heart attack is imminent.
3. EXPOSITORY ESSAY - JUST THE FACTS
•An informative piece of writing that presents a balanced
analysis of a topic.
•The writer explains or defines a topic, using facts, statistics,
and examples

person
Surprisingly enough, procrastination can even help you fix a relationship with
another person. If you had a fight, for example, there is a period of time when your words
will most likely be perceived offending. Besides, you might have noticed how unwilling you
may be when having to apologize in front of a different person–even if it was you who was
wrong. In this case, procrastination may give you enough time to make up your mind, find
your courage, and think of the proper words (or actions) for an apology. Use this to your
advantage. As we can see, procrastination is not necessarily a bad thing. Unlike many people
got used to believing, procrastination is not a negative trait of character such as laziness, but
rather a psychological mechanism, the main function of which is to slow you down and give
you enough time to sort out your priorities, gather information before making an important
decision, or finding proper words to make your amends with another person.
4. PERSUASIVE ESSAY - CONVINCE ME
• The goal of the persuasive essay is to convince the reader to accept the
writer’s point of view or recommendation
• The writer must build a case using facts and logic, as well as examples,
expert opinion, and sound reasoning.
• The writer should present all sides of the argument, but must be able to
communicate clearly and without equivocation why a certain position is
correct.

PAIR ACTIVITY
Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, but not everyone reacts to them in
the same way. When the earthquake hit, the doors, lights, curtains, bookshelves
and television monitor started to sway. We all felt a wave going through us.
Some people just looked around and said, “oh. An earthquake.” It did not
bother them at all. But other people were not so calm. One girl screamed and
fainted in her seat. Two boys jumped up and ran for the door. The teacher fell
on her knees and started praying. A few people called their parents or
grandparents to tell them they loved them. I did not think the earthquake was
such a big deal, but it was obviously very frightening for some people.
NARRATIVE ESSAY
You can buy a good medical cover and pay for the best treatment but
cannot guarantee good health. If you are not healthy, you will not get to enjoy
life. The reason is that you will not be healthy enough to do the things you
enjoy doing but will be limited. Those with terminal illnesses can agree that
money cannot heal them. They might get better treatment to make them more
comfortable, but the condition remains. Health is more important than money,
and it is better to have good health with no money than have all the money in
the world and be sick. People realize the value of good health, and that is why
people are spending a lot of time doing research trying to find the cure to
different illnesses.
PERSUASIVE ESSAY
People age and their looks change, but we often remember them as they
used to be. When I think of my mother, I see her as she was when I was a
boy. She was a beauty. Hair styles changed many times while I was growing
up, and my mother’s did, too, but I usually think of her with her hair done
up in a beehive. She had wavy, dark brown hair and hazel eyes. Her face
was a slightly rectangular oval, which made her look both gentle and strong.
She had high, arching eyebrows and a triangular, slightly turned up nose.
Her chin was smooth and feminine. She was not very tall, about five feet six
inches, but she was slim and graceful, so I never thought of her as short
compared to other adults. I still see her attractive despite of age.
DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
During the monsoon season, Taiwan receives a lot of heavy rain. A lot
of heavy rain at one time can be very destructive. Heavy rain can wash out
bridges. When a lot of rain falls over a short time, the ground is unable to soak
most of it up and the water begins to run downhill. Taiwan is a mountainous
island, so most of the rain that falls on it ends up flowing downhill and
combining into deep, fast-moving rivers. These rivers are powerful enough to
move large rocks and tear up riverbanks. When a swollen river hits a bridge,
the water, rocks and mud may knock out its columns, remove it foundations,
or tear it apart. Every year, many bridges are destroyed in seasonal flooding.
We need bridges that can stand up to tropical weather
EXPOSITORY ESSAY
They have access to more resources and can get more luxuries to make
them happy. However, the excitement that comes with the monetary things is
only short-lived. After a while, the person becomes bored and looks for other
things. You will find people with more money indulging in dangerous activities
trying to fill the void that they cannot explain. Those with less money will not
have the luxuries rich people have, but they have learned to find happiness in
their lives without relying on money. Most wealthy people waste time focusing
on their wants instead of their needs, which should not be the case. Material
things get old fast and after some time, people look for other new things to
occupy themselves with. The more money one has, the more they will want to
spend on things that are not considered valuable.
