SUBJECT MATTER:

Electrical Connection
– Parallel and Series
OBJECTIVES:

 Explainthe similarities and differences of

parallel and series connection.

 Construct a circuit in different ways

 Appreciatethe importance of safety

precautions needed in using electricity
Pre- Cautions:
Be careful in dealing with the
bulbs you might broke it.
Do not play with the volt meter so
you cannot damage it.
Avoid doing unnecessary things
during activity.
Be safe always.
House Rules:
 Avoid
doing unnecessary things,do not roam
around, stay with your group.
 Raise
your hand to answer or if you ask
something.
 Do not answer in chorus.
 Stay
and participate actively with your
group.
 Listenif the other groups are presenting
their output.
 Minimize your Voice.

ACTIVITY A:
WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?

 Materials:
 For Circuit A For Circuit B
 3 connecting wires 4 connecting wires
 2 identical bulbs with holder (2.5 v) 2 identical bulbs with holder
 2 dry cells with holder 2 dry cells with holder
 Voltmeter for both circuits
Procedure:
 FOR CIRCUIT A.
 Construct a circuit using 3 connecting
wires, 2 identical bulbs and 2 batteries
such that when 1 bulb is unscrewed the
other bulb goes out also, once you’re done
with the task, disconnect the battery from
the circuit.
 Draw your set up. Label this Circuit A.
 Trace the paths of current in Circuit A.
FOR CIRCUIT B.
 This time, construct a circuit using 4 connecting wires, 2
identical bulbs and 2 batteries such that when 1 bulb is
unscrewed, the other bulb remains lighted. Once your
done with the task, disconnect the battery from the
circuit
 Draw your setup. Label this Circuit B
 Trace the path of current in Circuit B.
 Put circuits A and B side by side. Observe the brightness of
the bulbs.
 Measure the voltage across the two bulbs as well as the
voltage across each bulb in Circuit A. Do the same in
circuit B. Record your readings in Table 1.
Analysis:
1.How many path/s of current are there in
circuit A?
2.Why did the other bulb go out also when
you unscrewed the other in Circuit A?
3.How many paths can the current take in
circuit B?
4.Explain why the other bulb remains lighted
when you unscrewed one of them in Circuit
B?
5.Which circuits has brighter bulb A or B?

EXPLAIN:
How will you differentiate
series and parallel
connection?
ADVANTAGES OF SERIES AND PARALLEL
CONNECTION
 Parallel connection:
 Advandages: 1. Every unit that is connected in a parallel circuit gets
equal amount of voltage.
 2. It becomes easy to connect or disconnect a new element without
affecting the working of other elements.
 3. If any fault happened to the circuit, then also the current is able to
pass through the circuit through different paths.
 Disadvantages:
 1. It requires the use of lot of wires.
 2. We cannot increase or multiply the voltage in a parallel circuit.
3. Parallel connection fails at the time when it is required to pass
exactly same amount of current through the units
ADVANTAGES OF SERIES AND PARALLEL
CONNECTION
 Series connection:
 Advantages:
 1. Series circuits do not overheat easily. This makes them very useful in
the case of something that might be around a potentially flammable
source, like dry plants or cloth.
 2. Series circuits are easy to learn and to make. Their simple design is
easy to understand, and this means that it’s simple to conduct repairs
 3. we can add more power devices, they have a higher output in terms
of voltage .
 4. The current that flows in a series circuit has to flow through every
component in the circuit. Therefore, all of the components in a series
connection carry the same current.
 Disadvantages:
 1.If one point breaks in the series circuit, the total circuit will break.
 2. As the number of components in a circuit increases ,greater will be
the circuit resistance.
ELABORATE:
 Ifyou were to choose between the two
connections which circuits would you
choose and why?
 What do you think is the best
connection to be used at home and
why?
Why is it important to know the safety
precautions in dealing electricity?
EVALUATION:
1.In a parallel circuit if one of the light bulbs burns
out the rest will _____
a. Stop the flow of electricity
b. Will go out
c. Can still light up
d. Of the light bulbs burn out also
2.How many paths does the electric current can
take in a series circuit?
a. One b. two c. three d. four
3.Parallel circuits are:
a. Circuit that has only 1 path for current to travel
b. A circuit does not allow electricity to travel
c. Has more one path for current to travel
d. Magnets that cause electric current
4. If the voltage is increased;
a. The resistance will increase b. The current
will increase
c. The current will decrease d. None of the above
5. In a parallel circuit, if 1 connection is
broken, all the connections stop working
a. True
b. False
EXTEND:
