To Persuade and Raise Awareness
To Everyone to be more caring of our Beloved
Dhaka.

Bangladesh is the ninth most populous country and twelfth

most densely populated countries in the world. With the
current population growth rate of 3%, there is an increasing
problem of waste management particularly in the larger
cities. Currently, according to an UNFPA report, Dhaka is
one of the most polluted cities in the world and one of the
issues concerned is the management of municipal waste.
What is disposal of solid waste
Disposal of normally solid or semisolid materials, resulting from human
and animal activities, that are useless, unwanted, or hazardous,
such as:

• Garbage
• Rubbish
• Ashes
• Sewage-Treatment solids
• Mining wastes
• Dead animals
In Dhaka garbage is Almost Everywhere!

• Garbage is by the road

• Around the parks,
• By the rivers and lakes,
• Inside the trash cans,
• Outside the trash cans,
• Around the grocery shops,
• Beside the kindergartens
• And surrounding the playgrounds.

It can also be found by the main roads or on

the main roads…
Why does it continue to be in the mentioned places?

• Specific locations for dumping the

garbage is neither present in a
region nor are they properly used.
• People have not yet grown proper
Awareness about keeping the city
Clean.

Often they do not store the waste till finding

a dustbin. In public parks, schools or
university campuses, distance between two
trash cans is so large that people usually do
not walk all the way to throw a banana peel
or a used tissue. Atogether these worsened
the conditions...
Solution to Improper Solid Waste Disposal

The government should work to invest on proper SWD facilities, like sanitary
landfills and incineration factories.

Should also improve solid waste collection, by making sure they collect most of
the waste and segregating it to make disposal easier.

They should also increase awareness throughout all sectors of society.

LandFilling

• ‘Burying’ of waste

• PROBLEMS:
• Air pollution
• Generation of liquid leachate.
• Harmful Gas.
Incineration

• ‘Burning’ of Waste

• PROBLEMS:
• Emission of dangerous fumes.
• Incinerators require a source of
energy to start.
Vermicomposting
• ’Composting’ using various ‘Worms’.

• Manages Bio-Degradable waste.

• Highly Economical.
Effects of Improper Solid Waste Disposal

 Air pollution

 Groundwater Contamination

 Stagnant water for breeding insects.

 Land can get degraded and poisoned

Present Condition Disposal of Solid Waste in Dhaka

According to Dhaka City Corporation (1999), six dumping sites have

already been abandoned after filling to their capacities. These sites are:
(1) Kulsi,
(2) Chalkbari-Mirpur,
(3) Gabtoli-Mirpur,
(4) Shosan Ghat-Lalbagh,
(5) Mugdapara,
(6) Jatrabari.
 But at present almost all the wastages go to Matuail. Matuail landfill
covers about 52 acres, where 32 acres has already been filled up…
The Best We Can Do
