USING LOW COST

INFRARED IMAGING
SYSTEM

WHY VEIN IMAGING ?
Avoid injuries among children and elderly people
during drug delivery
Accurate location of veins is very much necessary
Contactless procedure
Intravenous drug delivery
Blood transfusion and kidney dialysis
Treatment of deep vein thrombosis
and varicose veins
WHAT IS INFRARED IMAGING ?
Infrared radiation spectrum ranges from 700-2500 nm
Near Infrared region(NIR) spectrum
is usually used for all kinds of
biomedical applications
The near-infrared
region (NIR) is situated
in the electromagnetic
spectrum between the
visible region and the
mid-wave infrared region
POTENTIAL FOR NIR IMAGING
NIR light is absorbed or scattered in the forward
direction by blood
Imaging in the NIR range (880–930 nm) provides good
contrast of subcutaneous veins.
Personal identification and Biometric application
Due to low absorption of skin and subcutaneous tissue
in the NIR-wavelength range, the NIR light penetrates
these tissues effectively.
BLOCK DIAGRAM

1. Light source used: Infrared LED Illuminator

2. Image Sensor used: Raspberry Pi Camera
3. Computer used: Raspberry Pi
4. Display used: LCD display
STEPS USED
Acquisition
Convert to grayscale
Morphological operations
Thresholding
Display results
HOW IT WORKS
We Rest our palm on Vein Scanner
 Palm Vein Scanner – near Infra Red Rays
 Infrared rays will pass through veins
 Veins carry Deoxygenated Hemoglobin
 Deoxygenated blood absorb infrared Rays
 Arteries and capillaries reflects infrared rays
Camera captures this pattern
Image processing on the obtained pattern
Display results on screen
WORKING
HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATIONS
Removed IR cut-off filter from R-Pi camera and
inserted Visible cut off filter
Raspberry Pi controller interfaced with R-Pi camera
Circuit design using basic circuit theory principles
Circuit consists of IR LED’s, resistors, PCB, soldering
Interfaced TFT-LCD display to Raspberry Pi
SOFTWARE IMPLEMENTATION
Configured Raspberry Pi
Raspbian
SD card formatter tool
G-Parted partition editor
Enable camera using ‘raspi-config’ settings
Screen supporting drivers configuration
Installed software OpenCV for Ubuntu
Libraries for image processing
Eclipse for C/C++ coding
Program coding and testing on Eclipse Luna CDT
Regular updates and upgrades for Ubuntu and R-Pi
UBUNTU TERMINAL COMMANDS
sudo nmap -sP 192.168.*.*
ssh -X pi@192.168.*.*
vim filename.cpp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install package name
raspi-config
raspistill -o image.jpg
cmake ..
make
xdg-open filename.ext
NETWORKING
Connection of Raspberry Pi to host computer
(NMAP)
DiskCC: Cross-compilation of the open source
OpenCV image processing library for Raspberry Pi for
image processing
Remote compilation and testing code on
Raspberry Pi
RESULT OBTAINED
PROBLEMS FACED
Tried to implement processing algorithms in MATLAB
and Windows OS, but due to compatibility issues we
moved to Ubuntu OS and OpenCV
Ubuntu and Raspberry OS need regular updates and
upgrades
