KARTILYA NG
KATIPUNAN
The Teachings of the Katipunan
A life that is not dedicated to a noble
and divine cause is like a tree without a
shade, if not, a poisonous weed.
A deed that is motivated by self-
interest or self-pity and done without
sincerity lacks nobility.
True piety is the act of being
charitable, loving one's fellowmen, and
being judicious in behavior, speech and
deed.
The Teachings of the Katipunan
 We are all equal, regardless of the color of
their skin; While one could have more
education, wealth or beauty than the other,
none of them can overpass one's identity.
 A person with a noble character values honor
above self-interest, while a person with a base
character values self-interest above honor.
 To a man with a sense of shame, his word is
inviolate.
 Do not waste your time; lost wealth can be
retrieved, but time lost is lost forever.
The Teachings of the Katipunan
Defend the oppressed and fight the
oppressor.
A wise man is someone who is careful
in all that he says; learn to keep the
things that need to be kept secret.
In the thorny path of life, the man
leads the way and his wife and children
follow; If the leader goes the way of
evil, so do the followers.
The Teachings of the Katipunan
Never regard a woman as an object for you
to trifle with; rather you should consider
her as a partner and a friend in times of
need; Give proper considerations to a
woman's frailty and never forget that your
own mother, who brought you forth and
nurtured you from infancy, is herself such a
person.
Do not do to the wife, children and
brothers and sisters of others what you do
not want others to do to your wife, children
and brothers and sisters.
The Teachings of the Katipunan
A (person's) worth is not measured
by his/her status in life, neither by
the length of his nose nor the
fairness of skin, and certainly not by
whether he is a priest claiming to be
God's
Decalogue of the Katipunan
Love God with all your heart.
Bear always in mind that the love
of God is also the love of country,
and this, too, is love of one's
fellowmen.
Engrave in your heart that the
true measure of honor and
happiness is to die for the freedom
of your country.
Decalogue of the Katipunan
All your good wishes will be
crowned with success if you have
serenity, constancy, reason and
faith in all your acts and
endeavor.
Guard the mandates and aims of
the K.K.K. as you guard your
honor.
Decalogue of the Katipunan
It is the duty of all to deliver, at
the risk of their own lives and
wealth, anyone who runs great risks
in the performance of his duty.
Our responsibility to ourselves and
the performance of our duties will be
the example set for our fellowmen to
follow.
Insofar as it is within your power,
share your means with the poor and
the unfortunate.
Decalogue of the Katipunan
Diligence in the work that gives
sustenance to you is the true basis of
love—love for your self, for your wife and
children, for your brothers and
countrymen.
Punish any scoundrel and traitor and
praise all good work. Believe, likewise,
that the aims of the K.K.K. are God-given,
for the will of the people is also the will
of God.
XIV RULES OF KARTILYA:
 The life that is not consecrated to a lefty and
reasonable purpose is a tree without a shade, if
not a poisonous weed.

 To do good for personal gain and not for its own

sake is not virtue.

 It is rational to be charitable and love one’s

fellow and creature, and to adjust one’s conduct,
acts and words to what is in itself reasonable.
 Whether our skin be black or white, we are all
born equal, superiority in knowledge, wealth
and beauty are to be understood, but not
superiority by nature.

The honorable man prefers honor to personal

gain; the scoundrel, gain to honor.

 To the honorable man, his word is sacred.

 Do not waste thy time: wealth can be

recovered but not time lost
 Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor
before the law or in the field.

 The prudent man is sparing in words and

faithful in keeping secrets.

 On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of

woman and the children, and if the guide leads
to the precipice, those whom he guides will also
go there.
Thou must not look upon woman as a mere
plaything, but as a faithful companion who
will share with thee the penalties of life,
her (physical) weakness will increase thy
interest in her and she will remind thee of
the mother who bore thee and reared
thee.
What thou dost not desire done unto thy
wife, children, brothers and sisters, that do
not unto the wife, children, brothers and
sisters of thy neighbor.
 Man is not worth more because he is a
king, because is aquiline, and his color
white, not because he is a prince a
servant of God, nor because of the high
prerogative that he enjoys upon earth,
but he is worth most who is a man of
proven and real value, who does good,
keeps his words a worthy and honest; he
who loves and cherishes his fatherland
thought he be born in the wilderness and
know no tongue but his own.
 XIV. When these rules of conduct shall be known to
all, the longed for sun of Liberty shall rise brilliant
over this most unhappy portion of the globe and its
rays shall diffuse everlasting joy among the
confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of
those who have gone before, the fatigues and the well-
paid sufferings will remain. If he who desires to enter
has informed himself of all this and believes he will be
able to perform what will be his duties, he may fill out
the application for admission.

 As the primary governing document, which determines

the rules of conduct in the Katipunan, properly
understanding the Kartilya will thus help in
understanding the values, ideals, aspirations, and even
the ideology of the organization.
 Similar to what we have done to the accounts
of Pigafetta, this primary source also need to
be analyzed in terms of content and context.
As a document written for a fraternity whose
main purpose is to overthrow a colonial regime,
we can explain the content and provisions of
the Kartilya as a reaction and response to
certain value system that they found
despicable in the present of state of things
that they struggled against with.
 In the content of the Spanish colonial era where
indios were treated as the inferior of the white
Europeans, the Katipunan saw to it that the
alternative order that they wished to promulgate
through their revolution necessarily destroyed
this kind of unjust hierarchy. It can analyzed the
value uphold in the document as consistent with
the burgeoning rational and literal ideals in the
18th century and 19th century.
Equality , tolerance, freedom, and liberty were
values that the first emerged to the 18 th
century FRENCH REVOLUTION which spread
throughout EUROPE and reached the educated
class of the colonies JACINTO as ilustrado
himself, certainly got an understanding of
them values. Aside from the liberal values
that can be dissected in the document, we can
also decipher certain VICTORIAN and
chivalrous values in the text.
The teaching of the Katipunan of how women
should be treated with honor and respect while
positive in many respects and certainly a
significant stride from the practice of raping
and physically abusing women, can still be
telling of the Katipunan’s secondary regard for
women in relation to men.
In the contemporary eyes, the katipunan can be criticized
because of these provisions. However, one must not forget
the context where the organization was born. Not even in
Europe or in the whole of the West at that junction
recognized the problem of gender inequality. Indeed, it can
be argued that katipunan’s recognition of women as
important partners in the struggles as reflected not just in
kartilya but also in the organizational structure of the
fraternity where a women’s unit was established, is an
endeavor advanced for its time. Aside from Rizal’s known
LETTER TO THE WOMEN OF MALOLOS, no same effort by
the supposed cosmopolitan propaganda movement was
achieved until the movement’s eventual disintegrations in the
latter part of the 1890s.
Asides from this, the kartilya was
instructive not just of the katipunan’s
conduct toward other people, but also for
the member’s development as individuals
in their own rights. Generally speaking,
the rules in the kartilya can be classified
as either directed to how one should treat
his neighbors or to how one should develop
and conduct one’s self. Both are essential
to the success and fulfillment of the
katipunan’s ideals.
