It is important to know yourself:

• You will discover something you don’t

know about yourself– and like it
• You will know your moods, attitudes, and
beliefs begin – and other people’s stop
• You will notice more than you imagined
about the rest of the world
• You will find yourself on track to getting
what you want
• You will laugh more

It is important to know yourself:
• “Why is this happening to me?”
• “Why do I keep having the same
problems?”
• “Why am I so frustrated?”

If they go unanswered, we become stuck in a cycle,

continually repeating the past and forever on the defensive.

Taking control of our lives requires that we find the

answers.
Defining the “SELF”
Philosophical terms:
-BEING – source of a person’s consciousness
-agent responsible for individual’s thoughts and actions

*based from this definition, the “Self” is an intangible entity that directs person’s thoughts
and actions. It is the outside physical realm of a person.

Psychology, Sociology, or Religion:

-essence of a person: thoughts, feelings and actions, experiences,
beliefs, values, principles, and relationships
-includes a person’s life purpose, meaning, and aspirations

Integrating the various definitions (emphasizing on psychological definition)

SELF is defined as cognitive and affective representation of one’s
identity, it is then defined in terms of human characteristics such as
behavior and thought.
PERSONALITY
In Psychology – referred to as the set of behaviors, feelings, thoughts,
and motives that identifies an individual.
- the essence of who we are and is the embodiment of one’s physical,
psychological, cognitive, affective, and spiritual self.
Therefore:
When we speak of the “SELF”, we will describe it in personality terms.
Two key components of personality:
**Uniqueness of an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior
**Being relatively enduring (being consistent) over different situations

Example : “FRIENDLY”
Uniqueness – manifestation of your own brand: sunny disposition, readiness to
give advice when needed, generosity to those in need
Consistent – from childhood to adolesence to adulthood

* Consistency through time and the unique manner by which thoughs, feelings,
and behavior are expressed, defines personality.
PERSONALITY? NATURE? NURTURE?
PERSONALITY= NATURE + NURTURE

There is no single gene that creates a trait.

It is always a complex combination of genes, environmental

exposure and experiences, and cultural backgrounds.
View points of PERSONALITY
* Personality Trait – is a disposition to behave consistently in a
particular way (e.g. shyness or social awkwardness)
Trait Theory is an approach in identifying types of personalities based on
certain traits or attributes, which vary from one person to the other.
Five universal and widely agreed upon dimensions of personality.

* Attitude – a settled way of thinking and feeling about someone or
something, typically reflecting in a person’s behavior.
Implicit attitudes are thoughts or feelings that conscious awareness does
not cover
Explicit attitudes are thoughts or feelings that perceived consciously and
express accordingly

For attitude to come in existence, it needs three components:

affect (emotions),
cognition (way of thinking), and
behavior (manifestation of attitude)

What influences attitude?

Social Factors
Learning
Operant Conditioning
Modelling
View points of PERSONALITY
* Self-Concept – is the cognition of oneself, what one thinks, she/he
knows about her/his identity, personality, and individuality
* Self-Esteem – is attitude towards oneself; how one values oneself
given the negative or positive feedback she/he receives

Self-concept is purely or mostly informational while self-esteem is emotionally inclined

Questions to ponder:
1. What will happen if one is raised in an unsupportive home filled with
verbal degradations?
2. What will happen if one is raised in a fostering or nurturing
environment?
3. Is it right to compare individuals with high self-esteem from low self-
esteem? Why or why not?
4. What can be done, if one’s enemy is her or his low self-esteem?
5. What can be done, if one’s enemy is her or his bloated self-esteem
and self-concept?
