Political
Roland Robertson, professor
of sociology at University of
Aberdeen, an early writer in
the field, defined globalization
in 1992 as: the compression of
the world and the
intensification of the
consciousness of the world as
a whole.
Sociologists
Martin Albrow and
Elizabeth King define
globalization as: all
those processes by
which the peoples of
the world are
incorporated into a
single world society.
In The Consequences of
Modernity, Anthony Giddens
uses the following definition:
Globalization can thus be
defined as the intensification
of worldwide social relations
which link distant localities in
such a way that local
happenings are shaped by
events occurring many miles
away and vice versa.
Homogeneity
Homogeneity
It refers to the increasing sameness in the
world as cultural inputs, economic factors,
and political orientations of societies expand
to create common practices, same
economies, and similar forms of
government.

It (in culture) is often linked with “cultural

imperialism” which means that a given
culture influences other cultures.

Examples: Christianity, Americanization

Heterogeneity
Heterogeneity
It pertains to the creation of various cultural
practices, new economies, and political
groups because of the interaction of
elements from different societies in the
world.

It also refers to the differences because of

either lasting differences or of the hybrids or
combinations of cultures that can be
produced through different transplanetary
processes.

Cultural hybridization
Conclusion
Take Note!

Globalization is a concept that

is not easy to define because in
reality, it has a shifting nature. It
is complex, multifaceted, and
can be influenced by the
people who define it. Moreover
the issues and concerns
involving globalization have a
wide range– from the individual
to the society, from small
communities to nations and
states, and from the benefits
we can gain from it to the costs
it could carry.
