• Road congestion • Urban sprawl • Air pollution – – Green House Gases & Transportation – Source - Transportation – Contribution - around 24% Green House Gases Emission
Contributed by - People living in Urban cities - 75% of CO2 emissions are
from urban cities Solution? • Reducing the emissions – Need of the hour • Solution? – Green Mobility • Green mobility is the main key sector for green economic growth. Questions raised • How can we become more efficient at identifying and implementing green mobility solutions?
• How can green mobility contribute to the
achievement of sustainable development?
• How can green mobility affect urban planning?
Green Mobility Green mobility is – sustainable transportation that allows the basic access needs of individuals and societies to be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and eco- system health, and with equity within and between generations. – Green mobility - sustainable transportation - means activities that support the long-term livelihood of our society. Green Mobility should – Be affordable – operating efficiently – offering choice of transport mode – supporting a vibrant economy – limits emissions and waste within the planet’s ability to absorb them – minimizes consumption of non-renewable resources – limits consumption of renewable resources to the sustainable yield level – reuses and recycles its components – minimizes the use of land and the production of noise Modes of Green Transportation Electric Vehicles • Alternate for IC engines • Benefits include – Environmental benefits – lower CO2 emission – Performance benefits • Less maintenance • Quiet and Smooth operation • Strong acceleration • Major challenges - infrastructure for battery charging Pedestrians
• One should prefer to walk to the school, to work and
to grocery shopping etc. • Walking involves zero emission of any greenhouse gas • It’s free and a good form of exercise for the body” Bicycles • Another great mode of green transportation. • Faster than walking • low cost • a healthy exercise • Buying and maintenance cost is only fraction of that required for car Public Transport System • Cities have good infrastructure for public transport system • Affordable and easily accessible mode • Useful for students and senior citizens who can get attractive discount Benefits of Green Mobility Less Polluted Environment Improved Health More Sustainable Economic Development Public and Green Vehicles transportation creates more job opportunities Reduces socio-economic inequalities Money Savings less fuel consumption – increase in savings • Copenhagen – Capital of Denmark - World’s Best City for Cyclists • 50% of population uses bike to go for work or education. Objectives of Case Study: – Promoting energy efficiency by advancing sustainable transport in urban areas – Being affordable, operating efficiently, and offering a choice of transport modes – Maintaining the integrity of ecosystems and minimizing land use and noise – Reducing noise, air pollution, and CO2 emissions – Creating a “greener” image for the city Key efforts for the case study
• The plans for transport are
the city of cyclists improved public transport traffic calming and parking restrictions environmental efforts like low emission zones, possible congestion charging and environmentally friendly vehicles Solutions in detail Solution 1: The City of Cyclists • Overall goal – world’s best city for cyclists • Framework – measures in cycling • Efforts started since 2007 • Contributed to reduce 50% of CO2 emissions by 2025 • Initiatives taken to achieve: – Pedestrian / cycle bridges constructed over water ways and major road. Solutions in detail Solution 2: Improved Public Transport • Local S-trains - hybrid urban-suburban rail serving a metropolitan region • Increasing Metro, and the high-frequency A-bus network • A city ring for the Metro is under construction and is expected to open in end of 2019 Solutions in detail Solution 3: Environmental Efforts • Making them more bicycle-friendly • More liveable city – – reduced carbon emissions – air pollution in the city – the shift from cars to bicycles - saves time and money – total cost of air pollution, accidents, traffic congestion, noise and wear and tear on infrastructure when travelling by bicycle and car, society actually benefits by € 0.16 for every extra kilometer travelled by bicycle instead of by car Solution Implementations Create a network of bicycle lanes – Reduces traveling time – Increased safety – Convenience – Time saving – Saves 90,000 tons of CO2 emission annually – The city is looking to increase that number to 50% by building more bike lanes, widening existing lanes, creating biking-only bridges over the city’s waterways, providing more space for parking bikes, and improving safety along existing bike routes Cycling - Important Mode of Sustainable Mobility • Reduction in Traffic Congestion • Time and Money Saving • Quality of Life • Small Local businesses and New Local Jobs Strategies Worked Out • Pedestrian Strategy encourages more people to walk more – contribute to a living city, and a good urban environment
• Cycle Strategy ensures – Copenhagen - the
world’s best cycle city • Ensure safe, faster and secure life Future Recommendations • Creation of a continuous cycle system directly through a wide cycle track should be installed Future Recommendations • Design paths to allow safe bike crossings Future Recommendations • Separate Cycle Path - design cycle lanes all over the street. Future Recommendations • Creation of a high-speed cycle route. Future Recommendations • Solar Bike Lane, promote the establishment of solar roads, as the solar power from the road will be used for practical applications in street lighting, traffic systems, and electric cars Future Recommendations • Route Guidelines: The design should create awareness using messages to indicate the presence of both pedestrians and cyclists. • Road Lighting should be applied to cycle tracks. • Bicycle Parking; parking facilities should be located, such as solar parking lots where electric hybrid bicycles can be recharged from sunlight-powered panels. • Solar e-bike; solar panels in the areas of the wheels. The panels absorb solar energy and charge the battery. The motor can push the bike at 25 to 50 kph. Green Mobility In INDIA Need to Address much required mobility needs of cities – infrastructure for Bus based transport – depots, maintenance facilities, ITS etc – bring in private entrepreneurial spirit in operations – promote Non motorized Transport (NMT), Last mile connectivity – promote alternate fuels, Electric Mobility for better environment – focus on Urban Freight – address high fatalities of pedestrians Therefore, need a separate sustainable urban mobility scheme having pan city coverage with emphasis on improving access of citizens Coverage & Funds Required City Selection Process Expected Outcomes
