ULTRAVIOLET RAYS
 Ultraviolet (UV) designates a band of the
electromagnetic spectrum with
wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm, shorter
than visible light but longer than X-rays.
 UV radiation is present in sunlight, and
contributes about 10% of the total
electromagnetic radiation output from the
Sun.
 a type of electromagnetic radiation that
makes black-light posters glow, and is
responsible for summer tans — and
sunburns.
 "Ultraviolet"
means "beyond violet"
(from Latin ultra, "beyond"), violet
being the color of the highest
frequencies of visible light.
 Johann Wilhelm Ritter – German
physicist who discovered UV radiation
in 1801
 “oxidizing rays”
Natural Sources
 Ultraviolet
radiation is produced by
high-temperature surfaces, such as
the Sun.
 Extremelyhot stars emit
proportionally more UV radiation
than the Sun.

BENEFICIAL
 UV light causes the body to produce vitamin D,
which is essential for life.
 UV rays also treat certain skin conditions.
 Ultraviolet rays can be used to kill microbes.
Food and drug companies also use UV lamps
to sterilise their products.
 Hospitals use UV lamps to sterilise surgical
equipment and the air in operating theatres.
HARMFUL
 Exposure to UV rays can cause premature aging
of the skin and signs of sun damage such as
wrinkles, leathery skin, liver spots, actinic
keratosis, and solar elastosis.
 UV rays can also cause eye problems.
 Suntan and sunburn are familiar effects of
over-exposure of the skin to the UV, along
with a higher risk of skin cancer.
SEATWORK
1. What is the radiation that is
produced by high temperature
surfaces?
2. Give an example of a high
temperature surface.
3. ( True of False ) Ultraviolet has a
wavelength longer than visible light
but shorter than x-rays.
4. What kind of vitamin that UV light
causes?
5. Give one benefit of UV radiation.
6. ( True or False ) Food and drug
companies use UV lights to sterilise
their products.
7. Give one harmful effect of UV
radiation.
8. What are the two familiar harmful
effects of over-exposure of the skin to
UV?
9. ( True or False ) UV rays cause eye
problems.
10. What is the exact wavelength of UV
rays?
