Tunku Abdul Rahman
Background
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj ibni Almarhum
Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah;
Born: 8 February 1903;
Given the alias Bapa Kemerdekaan (Father of
Independence) & Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia);
Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya (1955 –
1957);
Prime Minister of Malaya (1957 – 1963);
Prime Minister of Malaysia (1963 – 1970).
Died: 6 December 1990.
Contributions
Lead Malaya to independence:
August 1951: elected as UMNO president;
January 1956: Independence mission to London;
February 1956: signed the independence
agreement, scheduled for August 1957;
31 August 1957: Tunku proclaimed Malaya’s
independence.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam
Malaysia;
19 August 1960;
President of PERKIM until
1989.

Formed Malaysia:
May 1961: suggested the merger of Malaya with

Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1976 to 1981;
