Prayer Before the
Class
Dear Lord and Father of all, thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you provide for us all.
For your protection and love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on what we
are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover more
about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

SOLVING RATIONAL INEQUALITIES
Activity
GAME: “THE BOAT IS SINKING”
Instructions:
1.Gather the students in a big circle.
2.There will be a given function to be solve.
The teacher will provide a value for x and
the students will solve for the value of y
which will be the number they need to
group themselves.
3.Anyone left without a group is out of the
game.
4.Any of the students who are part of a group
must write the answer on the table posted
on the board.
5.Repeat steps two to four, gradually
increasing the pace.
6.The activity ends when almost all
participants have been eliminated from the
game and you are left with only two or
three participants standing. The teacher
may opt to award simple prizes to them or
ask everyone to give them a hearty round

Analysis
1.How do you find the activity?
2.What difficulties have you
encountered?
3.What can you notice on the set of
ordered pairs posted/written on the
board?
4.Based on the previous lesson, can we
consider that the set of ordered pairs
What did you

Why does one-to-one

a special type of

How can we test if
the given is a one-
to-one function?
All functions
satisfy the
vertical line test.
All one-to-one
functions satisfy
both the vertical
Example 1. The relation
pairing an SSS member to
his or her SSS number.
Solution: Each SSS member is
assigned to a unique SSS number.
Thus, The relation is a function.
Further, two different members
cannot be assigned the same SSS
Example 2. The relation
pairing a real number to
its square.
Solution: Each real number has a
unique perfect square. Thus, the
relation is a function. However,
two different real numbers such
as 2 and -2 may have the same
square. Thus, the function is not
an airport to its airport code.
Airport codes are three letter
codes used to uniquely identify
airports around the world and
prominently displayed on
checked-in bags to denote the
destination of these bags.
Here are some examples of airport codes:
>MNL- Ninoy Aquino International Airport
(All Terminals)
>CEB- Mactan-Cebu International Airport
>DVO- Francisco Bangoy International
Airport (Davao)
>JFK- John F. Kennedy International Airport
(New, York City)
>CDG- Charles de Gaulle International
Airport (Paris, France)
Solution: Since each airport
has a unique airport code,
then the relation is a function.
Also, since no two aiports
share the same airport code,
then the function is one-to-
one.
Example 4. The
relation pairing a
person to his or her
citizenship.
Solution. The relation is
not a function because a
person can have dual
Group Work
The class will be divided into 5
groups. Each group must give 3
examples of situations that can
be represented as one-to-one
function.
QUIZ
Direction: Write the word “Yes” if the given represents
one-to-one function, otherwise write “No”. Justify your
answer.
1. {(5,6), (2,9), (2,7), (9,5), (4,14), (5,1)}
2. . x 6 -8 15 7 0
y 15 13 -15 0 40
