Qualified and Jobless

The rate of employment among college graduates is exponentially

declining in India
Increasing rate of unemployment in India

Young Indians (aged 15-24 years) constitute nearly a

fifth of India’s total population, according to the
country’s 2011 Census. By 2020, they are predicted
to make up a third of the country’s population.

Between 20 – 24 years constitute 40% of Indian

population, have an unemployment rate of 32
percent

The unemployment rate among the educated is even

worse. The rate among people with at least a graduate
degree was 13.17 per cent in September-December 2018
up from 10.39 per cent in May-August 2017.

• Outdated University
curriculum
• Focus on finishing the
curriculum

With increased access to the information as a result of the advent of the digital
medium, the university framework needs to encourage facilitative learning as a
framework to create a more engaging classroom experience.
• More emphasis on
marks rather than
knowledge and skills
• Practical application
of classroom teaching
is overlooked

This results driven approach, as opposed to a knowledge enhancing approach often

results in rote learning of the key concepts rather than understanding the larger
framework within which they operate.
• According to the India
today survey across
MU colleges, most
students remain
unclear of their
career path
• there is limited
understanding of the
job/career prospects
in the space
While a number of universities are seen to be increasing their focus on building a career cell, there needs to
be an increased focus across universities/colleges to either build the expertise in-house or partner with
vocational training institutes to develop more robust Career Development Cells to train/equip students with
the requisite employment oriented skills.
Skill Development : How?
• An increased focus on
"employment oriented"
or "job ready" skills is
required
• vocational skilling exists
outside of the realm of
the university framework,
with a number of
corporates outlining
graduate degrees as a key
requirement
