M.SUBALAKSHMI
WHAT IS SMART DUST?
• It is mainly micro electro mechanical system(MEMS)
• It combines sensing, robotics computing that can
sense light,temperature,vibration,magnetism or
chemicals.
• The are usually networked wirelessly and are
distributed over some area to perform task usually
sensing.
HISTORY OF SMART DUST
• smart dust was invented in 2001 by
Kristopher S.J pister, who is an electrical
engineer.
The NASA has been funding smart dust
Research heavily seeing virtually limitless
Application in the sphere of modern welfare
HOW IT WORKS?
• Smart dust is a network of ‘motes’ ,identical or
similar tiny computers consisting of four components
• Ambient sensor
• Wireless transmitter
• CPU
• Power source
TECHNOLOGY USED
• Digital circuitry
• MEMS technology
• RF Wireless communication
DIGITAL CIRCUITRY
• Micro electronic circuitry can be thought as the
brain of the system.
• MEMS devices are manufactured using batch
fabrication technique similar to those used for
integrated circuit unprecedented level of
functionality, reliability and can be replaced on a
silicon chip at a low cost.
MEMS TECHNOLOGY
• Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System(MEMS) is the
integration of mechanical elements, Sensors,
actuator and electronics on a common silicon
substrate.
• While the electronics are fabricated using Ic the
micro mechanical components are fabricated using
“micromachining “process.
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION
• It is required of sending and receiving data with
data transfer rate of 1 Kbps.
• The device for communication are subjected to size
and power constraints
• It must support bi-directional communication
between a central transceiver and up to 1000 dust
motes.
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL MOTE
OPTICAL COMMUNICATION
• ACTIVE
High power laser source
Transmission of modulated laser beam
• PASSIVE
MEMS corner cube refractory
Extremely low power
CCR
• It comprises three perpendicular mutually mirrors of
gold coated poly-silicon.
• It has the property that any incident ray of light is
reflected back to the source.
• Using micro fabricated CCR we can achieve data
transmission at a bit rate of 1 kilo bit rate per
second.
SMART MESH
• The smart mesh sits between the sensor
and systems providing connections
between these two layers.
• Each node of smart mesh or mote is a
ultra low power wireless communication
mode.
SPACE EXPLORATION WITH SMART DUST
• Developing such a system on an alien world would
be much cheaper than sending a massive rover.
• The orbiter would act as a forward base of
operation processing them before sending them to
earth.
• Exporting the myth of universe will be faster.
SMART DUST IN REAL WORLD
• It sector
• Defense application
• Medical application
• Environment monitoring
IT SECTOR
• Accelerometer containing smart dust
• MEMS microphone in portable device
• Monitor and volume of traffic to avoid
recuring Traffic jams
DEFENSE APPLICATION
• It contains magentometer, a vibration sensor and a
GPS receiver.
• Spread on the battle field by moving vehicles
• To monitor critical parts of aircraft and other war
Vehicles.
MEDICAL APPLICATION
• Enter human bodies and check for physiological
• Problems.
• Relay information about cancerous cells.
• Biomedical application-Artificial retina
ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
• Conservation
• Detect hazadous chemicals and biological agents.
• Measuring humidity, temperature.
IMPACT ON SOCEITY
• Smart dust ‘s development use and employment in
the future ,further research in necessary, especially
in the area of Artificial intelligence.
• Social aspects-it can help in saving a lot of loss in
power in light and climatic control of building
CONCLUSION
• Many researches on the Smart dust project are
working on to make the size of the present latest
generation mote as small as possible and at low
cost.
• It will be used in various application of life leading
the present world to a Smarter world.
