• Making innovation happen depends on working
with many different players.
• Team working, bringing the different people
together in productive & creative ways inside
organization, links between organization,
developing and making use of increasingly wide
networks.
• Smart organization always recognize the
importance of linkages/connections
• Getting closer to customers, working with
suppliers, linking with collaborators, research
centers & competitors to build open innovation
system.

Important at the innovation process from finding
opportunities, through pulling together the resources to
develop the venture and capture the value.

interaction – the ways it flows and is combined
and deployed to make innovation happen.
• Ideas- involve building and running knowledge
network.
• Comprise of many different players – living
inside or outside organization.
TYPES OF INNOVATION
NETWORKS.
• Network – a complex, interconnected group or system.
• networking – using network to accomplish particular
tasks.
• Innovation network is about of “emergent properties” –
the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
• Network helps companies-
• Bump into new ideas & creative combination.
• Sharing the scare resources.
• Providing support for shared learning.
• Helping to spread the risks.
• Extend the range of things which might be tried.
NETWORKS AT THE START-UP

• A great idea and an interesting invention


required an extensive network of finance,
logistics, marketing, and manufacturing to
enable it to come to scale and sustainability.
• Begin with a process of network building,
linking up with key players able to provide
complementary skills and resources to get the
innovation established.
NETWORKS ON THE INSIDE.

• Inside – a lot of people with a lot of ideas and


how the organization could explore and exploit
those ideas.
• Let them be connected – knowledge
management.
• But, it is not an easy task.

• Let looks back to the previous chapter – open


innovation.
MAKING NETWORKS HAPPEN

• Networks support the establishment of


invention. – building up network must be based
on agenda.
• Different types of network have different issues
to resolve.
• The types of networks is position in term of:
 How radical the innovation target is with respect to
current innovation activity.
 The similarity of the participating companies.
HOW TO MANAGE NETWORK.
1. Set-up stage.
• To set up network.
• Providing momentum for bringing the network together
and clearly defining its purpose.
• Crisis may happen.
2. Operate stage.
• Set up operating procedures – and mission.
3. Sustain stage.
• Network need not last for ever.
• Sometimes it should be disbanded if mission
accomplished.
