AGENDA

• Objective

• Introduction

• Non-conventional process equipment and their advantages

• Annual micro reactor purchase

• Impact of micro reactors on process industries

• R & D studies on micro reactor technology

• Conclusion

• References

2
OBJECTIVE

• To study the different types of processes in process industries where process intensification is practiced with the aid of
micro reactors in order to reduce the plant cost and improve the amount of yield obtained in comparison to the bulk
reactions.

• Comparison of the non conventional, intensified industrial processes with the conventional processes which are being
practiced in the present day

3
INTRODUCTION

• Process intensification is a new and improved technology which includes catalysis, improved
separation, heat transfer, mass transfer and mixing established in 1970s.

• Process control and process optimisation are the two important steps involved in the process
intensification.

• It aims in reducing the plant volume by restoring the conventional unit operations with unconventional
models which is done by merging conventional operations into one composite structure.

• Although cost reduction was the original target for PI, it quickly became apparent that there were other
important benefits to be gained with respect to safety and environmental impact

4
NON-CONVENTIONAL PROCESS EQUIPMENT AND
THEIR ADVANTAGES

• The advent of non-cnventional process equpiment is flourishing and there has been a revolution
created by the introduction of Lab-on-chip methods.

• Micro reactors
• Compact heat exchangers
• Packed bed columns
• Static mixers

• These are some of the important and space occupying process equipment which have
undergone major changes through micro reactors.

7
ANNUAL MICRO REACTOR PURCHASE

8
IMPACT OF MICRO REACTORS ON PROCESS
INDUSTRIES

• Reduction in capital investment

• Reduction in energy usage

• Reduction in raw material cost

• Reduction in increased process flexibility

• Greater emphasis on process safety

• Greater attention to quality

• Enhanced environmental performance

• These characteristics of micro reactors have made replace the bulk reactors, packed bed
columns and heat exchangers.

• With this innovation, it is possible for us to have a process setup on a table top.

9
R&D STUDIES ON MICRO REACTOR TECHNOLOGY

• In India, many institutes are proposing projects for the usage of micro reactors and micro
channels for greater contact between the components.

• Though it has got its own disadvantages, the energy and capital conservation show that they are
advantageous.

• One of the processes was to produce bio-diesel with the usage of micro channels using palm oil
and methanol with KOH as a catalyst and these two liquids were pumped into the packed bed
column through micro channels where the contact between these two liquids was observed to be
maximum when compared to the conventional channels. This process was carried out at a
minimum flow rate.

10
CONCLUSION

• The agenda of this project was to introduce non-conventional chemical engineering processes and
how they are being transferred to process industries.

• These micro reactors and micro channels are in vogue in the process industries as they involve
less hazards, it is not expensive and it is space friendly.

• Lab-on-chip is now being practiced in many industries due to its high porosity, high heat transfer
and mass transfer coefficients and high surface to volume ration.
