COMPUTER COMPONENTS

 When talking about computers, the term "component" refers to a

basic physical element that's required by the computer to function. A
component of a computer is also referred to as computer hardware.
Every personal computer, whether it's a Windows or Mac system,
requires the same basic components to run. Software and firmware
are also required to make a computer useful, but they are not
generally included on lists of computer hardware components.
Components of a Computer
The five classic components of a computer are briefly described below. Each component is discussed in more
detail in its own section. The operation of the processor is best understood in terms of these components.

Processor External

Datapath Input

MEMORY

Control Output
COMPUTER COMPONENTS

Datapath - manipulates the data coming through the processor. It also

provides a small amount of temporary data storage.
Control - generates control signals that direct the operation of memory
and the datapath.
Memory - holds instructions and most of the data for currently executing
programs.
Input - external devices such as keyboards, mice, disks, and networks that
provide input to the processor.
Output - external devices such as displays, printers, disks, and networks
that receive data from the processor.
Major components of a computer

 Motherboard -The motherboard is a printed circuit board and foundation of a

computer that is the biggest board in a computer chassis. It allocates power and
allows communication to the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware
components.

 Processor/CPU- A processor (CPU) is the logic circuitry that responds

to and processes the basic instructions that drive a computer. The
CPU is seen as the main and most crucial integrated circuitry (IC) chip
in a computer, as it is responsible for interpreting most of computers
commands.
Power Supply- Also called a power supply unit or PSU, the component that
supplies power to a computer. Most personal computers can be plugged
into standard electrical outlets. The power supply then pulls the required
amount of electricity and converts the AC current to DC current.

Hard Drive-A hard disk drive (sometimes abbreviated as hard drive, HD,
or HDD) is a non-volatile memory hardware device that permanently stores and
retrieves data on a computer. A hard drive is a secondary storage device that
consists of one or more platters to which data is written using a magnetic head,
all inside of an air-sealed casing.
PCI-Express Card- PCI Express, technically Peripheral Component
Interconnect Express but often seen abbreviated as PCI-e or PCI-E, is a
standard type of connection for internal devices in a computer.

Graphics Card- A graphics card is a device installed in a computer that consists of

a graphics processing unit designed to help process and display
images, especially 3D graphics. Graphics cards help take the
processing strain off the main processor, and can contain their
own memory to take the strain off the system RAM.
Ram/Memory- RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a computing device where
the operating system (OS), application programs and data in current use are kept so they can
be quickly reached by the device's processor. RAM is the main memory in a computer, and it is
much faster to read from and write to than other kinds of storage, such as a hard disk drive
(HDD), solid-state drive (SSD) or optical drive.
Computer Peripherals

 A computer peripheral is any external device that provides

input and output for the computer. For example, a keyboard
and mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor and printer
are output peripherals. ... Some peripherals, such as external
hard drives, provide both input and output for the computer.
Types of Peripheral Devices

 There are many different peripheral devices, but they fall into three
general categories:

 Input devices- such as a mouse and a keyboard

 Output devices- such as a monitor and a printer
 Storage devices- such as a hard drive or flash drive
some examples of computer peripheral
devices
 Some common input devices include:

• keyboard
• mouse
• touchscreen
• pen tablet
• joystick
• MIDI keyboard
• scanner
• digital camera
• video camera
• microphone
Some common output devices include:

• monitor
• projector
• TV screen
• printer
• plotter
• speakers
There are also devices that function as
both input and output devices, such as:
• external hard drives
• media card readers
• digital camcorders
• digital mixers
• MIDI equipment

While these are some of the more common peripherals, there are many other
kinds as well. Just remember that any external device that provides input to the
computer or receives output from the computer is considered a peripheral.
